Was the shudder as if the trans was trying to change back through the gears when accelerating up after slowing for say a roundabout? because this is what mine is doing
Hello everyone.
I own a 2005 TDV6 SE which has done only 67000km, of which about 30000 has been towing a 3 tonne caravan. Started to get "shudder" about 2000km ago when at about 2000rpm range in acceleration irrespective of gear.
Problem turned out to be torque converter after having gear box removed and inspected. Have friend with same car and ditto problem, also towing.
Interested to know if anyone else has had the same problem.
Thanks

The ZF box is supposedly filled for life, but the website says the ATF should be chaged every 80-120,000km if used for towing, at high speeds or in high temps.
The shudder is not uncommon. Some remedies have been to change the torque converter; change the fillter/ATF; or do a double flush.
The ATF is expensive and make sure you get the right one (ZF Lifeguard6 or equivalent) as the wrong one will stuff the tranny.
If you're not under warranty, buy the ATF direct from ZF. LR charge over $90 a litre here in WA
If you do the double flush, I would still recommend changing the filter/ATF one more time a bit later as gunk can come down.
There's been a lot written about this on the UK forum.
OK, my D3 has 96k on the clock and I was at 100k service going to have the trans fluid and the sump/filter replaced. So should this help or stop this bad down changing of the gears?[shudders] Because at this stage the engine seems to load it self up and when it finally takes of in the right gear it gives a big puff of black smoke, yet other than this the gearbox and engine are as smooth as silk
That should help significantly. I would also do a flush a few months later as well. Only about half the ATF is changed even if the filter/pan is replaced as it hides unp in the transmission.
I had mine flushed and then the pan/filter replaced and the difference was amazing.
OK I will be doing this at next service then as planed, quite looking forward to it now. thanks
I also had the shudder for a while but traded for a new one, I learnt that the dealer had to change the torque converter

Is there anything on the D3 that is not fragile
Dad has just had the gearbox replaced under his extended warranty, 75,000 kms used for towing a 3tonne van for the last 40,000 kms.
He was with a mate who has the SE (his is an S) and both had a vibration in third gear. Both boxes have now been replaced by Bruce Davis in Sydney, apparently the spacing in the earlier boxes between second and third is too wide when used for towing and is a well known issue for Land Rover and ZF.
Dad has added a transmission cooler which apparently lowers the oil temperature by around 20 degrees, Bruce has told him the gearbox oil should be changed every 40,000 kms if towing.
Cheers
Steve
