    TDV6 Auto Steel Pan and Seperate Filter

    The trundlebus has just returned from a 7000km round trip to Vic towing the 3 ton van where it developed a distinct modulating whirring sound at 90 to 100kph. The taco also oscillated between 1900 and 2000 rpm with no gear change nor any discernable surging in speed. All up, I think we have done about 60 thousand kilometers towing the van and have 130k on the clock

    After a visit to the local auto trans shop, and several "never seen/heard that before" the oil was replaced, a new steel pan and separate filter installed, the noise and taco oscillations have gone.

    I opted for an aftermarket steel pan as we intend to keep the trundlebus and next time it will only be oil and filter as the LR one has the filter and pan molded into a single unit that breaks when removed.

    Cost was $920, $370 of which was the oil and a couple of hundred in labor.

    Great info thanks Ryall! Can you PM me the details of the workshop? I have to do the same to a D3 soon and would prefer to jetison that useless plastic pan etc!

    I agree....great info. Thanks. Is the plastic pan a seperate plate with a filter unit attached or are you talking about something that is integral to the gearbox? (Sorry bit a newbie question but the shoe fits :-))

    When I get details on who makes the steel pan or where it’s available from I will post it here.

    The original LR auto transmission pan is the large rectangular flat black plastic "fluid pan" on the bottom of the gearbox its only 1.5 to 2 inches thick, is heavily fluted on the exterior bottom and is secured to the gearbox by twenty-one torx screws.

    The filter is molded into the bottom of the pan and is very thin. There are two magnets there also to trap any stray metal bits (none in mine and almost no grey sludge). At the back of the filter part there is a vertical pipe (all plastic) about an inch wide and four inches tall, it’s this bit that breaks away from the rest of the filter/pan body during removal. Hope that I've explained this properly.

    They showed it to me to explain the condition of the box after all that towing, which was on balance quite good despite the taco fluctuations.

    Hi Justin, Hope all is well in Tassie,
    A&B Automatic Transmissions in Dandenong Vic. do the kit & sell to dealers as an option.
    They also have their own workshop which is like a hospital
    as we have sent a few customers who do a LOT of towing there.
    Kit is relatively new.

    Contact details are as follows..He is also a LR nut & drives a P38.

    Tassies great, perfect weather ATM except for the smoke from fires down the channel has made itself known tonight and stunk out the house A friend of mine is batterned down in the cyclone shelter on Koolan island as Laurence approaches, so we are quite well off down here!

    And they still weigh 2 and a half tonnes??? Lordy!!

    Thanks, that is a great description and has made it very clear. Not that I don't trust the engineers but I might just see about an after-market pan myself.
