Where do I mount a fire extinguisher?

A silly question perhaps, but in light of another topic here and the fact that I carry one around anyway, where have others mounted theirs?

I am looking for somewhere to mount it that doesn’t get in the way, and I don’t want what could, in an accident, become a deadly projectile rolling around the car. With this in mind I currently keep mine in the nook where the tow hitch attachment is stored in the boot. This is not ideal for two reasons, one it isn’t easily accessible, and second that is right up against the sheet metal which means that nook gets very hot in summer, which poses it’s own problems with high pressure vessels like fire extinguishers……

    Any suggestions/advice welcome!

I am guessing you have a D3, which I am not familiar with.

That said, the preferred position for an extinguisher would be on the right side of the foot well on the passenger side, mounted to the transmission tunnel.

Wether this is suitable in the D3, I'm not sure, and the plastic would probably require some support behind it.

BTW - it is unlikely that your extinguisher will get hot enough in it's current location to cause any dramas. Worst case would be that the safety valve would operate, and discharge the contents inside the car...

I had thought about that location, but the transmission tunnel on the D3 is very wide, and it would encroach on Safari Baribie's foot space.....

As for discharging in the car, the mess would be well contained in it's current location, so maybe it is not such a bad thing after all.

I mounted mine (before the thieving scum who stole my car used it to spray the insides with) in the wine bottle holder in the rear driver-side door. Mounted a locking bracket above it to stop it being flung out during off-road 'maneuvers'

    Cheers,

    Gordon

Thanks, that is a good idea!! Got the locking bracket, so should work a treat!

    Wine Bottle Holder??

    Bloody snobs

You shouldn't drink & drive. You might hit a bump & spill some.

The other option is on the floor in-front of the passenger seat.

Just remember, wherever you do decide to mount it, don't forget to take it out of the holder every month or 2 and turn it upside down, and roll it around a bit. This stops the powder settling and ensures that you have it when needed.

Also gives you a chance to check the pressure gauge. This should be added to all service routines, just like oil, air & water.

Not quite sure why, but on the D3 each door has a seriously oversize bottle holder...... This is by far the best use I have ever seen suggested for it! (the wine, not the extinguisher that is)

Using a long arm and a ring spanner, reach in through the jack access panel to fasten the extinguisher bracket to the liner. I had to use some fine wire (must be able to be broken by hand in an emergency) to hold the bottle in place during off road use.

You'd need a long arm to reach it!

Thanks for that WD3! What size nuts bolts and washers did you use to secure the bracket?
