Thread: Fuel economy D4 TDV6 3.0

I did some calculations on about a 2500km "trip" probably half of it around town, and half open road, I would also have a tandem trailer on for about a quarter of the the time. The trip computor said an avaerage of 10.5l/100km for the trip and the actuall calculations were 11.2l/km.

I worried about it for a while but now I don't care, I like to stick my foot into it and enjoy it.... Worlds away from my old TD5.

Mine is a 3.0l SE with about 5500kms on the clock ALREADY?

That sounds strange. My D3 petrol V6 will get under 11's out on the highway and I thought the 2.7 TDV6 gets <8's.

Maybe you guys have to check again after around 15k.

TD5's didn't get good mileage until around 15k,& i had 3 of them from new.

Yep, it will be interesting to see if/how things change as the distance traveled goes up. I guess I'd probably expected / hoped for a bit better at this point, as kenl's bus seems to be doing - but I'm happy to give it the benefit of the doubt at this point. That is, unless a herd of other 3.0 owners post up better numbers than mine!

No real figures but showing 9.8 after 550 kms today of freeway (real 110/112) , country backroads(100) and Canberra city and showing 150 to empty from full to the brim, with mostly only modest acceleration and upshifting quite a lot. Almost 6K now done.

IF the tank holds 82L (as documented) and IF the distance to empty is to the 12L left when the low fuel light comes on (as documented) then its about right, but it definitely wont go as far as my T5 D2 on a tank.

Hmm - mine was showing about that when I filled up and did the calculations above - bit of a feel-god con job really! Not that I'm grumbling mind you - I love the way it gobbles triple-trailer road trains (which might also explain why it "gobbles" fuel too..)

Worry not, the D4's fuel consumption will improve with age, as will the D3. Right now it's new and it is likely to do worse than D3s, at least it did against three I measured.

I've done 2500Km in my 3.0 SE. About 10L/100 country cruising. About 14L/100 city burning off lights, surprising others and me how this 3 tonne truck jumps off the line. I think normal city driving would be 12 to 13 @ this age of the motor. Agree with others, with age, it should reduce.

NOTE to all: My digital fuel gauge is faulty, and therefore my distance to empty computer is totally up the creek. Dealer having me watch it to see if it "comes good" with age... It runs out of fuel at about 1/4 tank mark (no warning light, computer saying 200km to run), very painful experience for a brand new car. I suggest all to fill up at about 500km for a few tanks and do your own consumption calcs until you have confidence in the digital readouts.

BTW, what is wrong with an oil dipstick??? I miss it and i dont trust the digital one (as you can understand). I have always driven Land Rovers, and a stop at a petrol station is not complete without opening the bonnet to check something! Oil, water, brakes, steering fluid, gaze at that little engine that boots you along so quick. Why make it the oil dipstick electronic???
