Best Tyres D3 (moved from FAQ)

There are plenty of forums discussing these tyres just Goggle them and take your pick.

Regarding price I didn't bother to haggle to much or even ring around given some of the exorbitant prices I've seen quoted for other 18" All Terrains that are usually very close to standard OEM sizes and are usually more road orientated then these Hankooks.

I'm just happy that I have found a local retailer that can sell me a All Terrain tyre that is the actual size that I was looking for being 275 x 65 x 18's (32") for only $260 each fitted ($1300 for five). This price seems pretty good to me given the reviews and comments I'd read on various websites and forums and as they were purchased locally there is a warranty if there are any problems.

I guess time will tell if I made a wise purchase or not.

Sorry to say I still have the poxy old out of round Wranglers on the D2. I decided to take with me on Saturday a worn 285 x 75 x 16 (33") BFG All Terrain that had come off of my D1 to compare to the 275 x 65 x 18 (32") new Hankook tyres, so I could compare actual sizes. As I had been told that I might get a surprize at their actual size, especially width.

Well I put them side by side and there was no difference in height or width even though their should have been. In fact in width they actually looked bigger.
As 33's won't fit on a standard height D2 and these supposed 32's were every bit as big as 33's I decided not to go ahead with fitting them.

So back to the drawing board for now.

Hi TerryO, how did you measure the tyre sizes?

I have found that my 285 X 75 X 16 BFG A/T's are substantially smaller than most other tyres in that size once I have measured them. Using a visual comparison can be misleading and so I use a piece of string to run around the circumference of the tyre.

Tyre size will also change stlightly depending on what size rim the tyre is fitted to. A fat tyre squeezed onto a narrow rim will be taller than when fitted to a wide rim.

I had a set of these (Interco SSR) fitted to the 17" D3 alloys. The placard size was 265/70/R17, which calculates out to 31.6", but the measured size was 32.5"

These were the most aggressive tyres I have fitted to a D3. They just fitted on my D3, but that was with the ARB bull bar. You'd need to trim the internal plastic wheel-well liner otherwise.

no I admit that I didn't measure the tyres exactly to see what measured what.

What I had done, which I know is not exact science either, was put the same BFG alongside the wheel on the D2 and it filled the guard completely.
Given that the Hankook looks as big if not bigger when side by side with the BFG 33" I decided that I would go no further until I knew exactly what the go was, as once the tyres were fitted I would own them whether they fitted or not.

I did pick up a set of four original D2 16" steel wheels on the weekend while up in Newcastle that I brought on ebay a couple of weeks ago as spares for a set of muddies, for more serious off road playing in the D2, so I might for now fit up some tyres on them until I resolve what to do with the 18's.

I'd do just about anythng to get rid of the poxy Wranglers.

I'm with you there Terry, that and finding a good mud tyre for the 18's on the D3.

Perhaps I will have to succumb to the enevitable and fit 17's to expand my tyre options and live with forever changing wheels.

The other option I'm considering is just going down the BF Goodrich All Terrain 265 x 65 x 18 direction.

Has anyone fitted this size BFG All Terrains to their 18's?

Yes - I am on my 2nd set of them, as I liked the first set so much. I got 25,000km out of original Wranglers, then changed to Yokohamas. I changed them after about 60,000km for another set. I kept the two rear ones for spares, as they still had a bit of meat in the tread. I'm now at 94,000 km and they're still like new.

I also have a set of Dynamic steel 17" with BFG MT KM2s for serious work.

I think this is a great combination - Yokos for everyday and weekends away - quieter, better in wet/dry/offroad than Wranglers; and BFG MT for hard core trips.

Thanks Rob. The Wranglers are getting close to the end of their life. Something else to think about.
