New pics - body off RRS 3.0 for major surgery (blue oil smoke issue)

So after two secondary turbo replacements (I guess around $10,000 a time), LRA finally think they've figured out why my RRS has been single-handedly doubling the world's greenhouse gas emissions for the past few months.

Apparently, it's been nothing to do with the turbo at all. They've lifted the body off and discovered it's something to do with a faulty oil scavenger pump at the back of the engine, which is being replaced as I write this. Fingers crossed, this should be the end of a four-month mystery, and constantly being pulled over by other drivers to tell me about the Hiroshima-sized cloud of blue oil smoke billowing out the back of the car under sharp acceleration.

The tech guys tell me the scavenger pump picks up engine oil that pools in or under the turbos, and sends it back into the sump. Or at least, that's what it's supposed to do when it's working properly.

Second benefit of removing body: being able to get rid of half a ton of red dust and mud accumulated on our trip to the Kimberley last year!

    the offending scavenger pump.

two hours of unbolting and unplugging and off it comes.

left over Gibb River Road dust

    guts exposed.

Hopefully that fixes your problem. Such major surgery always worries me, I always think that they will have a bucket of nuts, bolts and bits left over at the end that they sweep under the carpet..... I always do when I pull things apart

Yep, worries me too. I just cross my fingers and hope those guys know what they're doing. 'Cos these bloody cars are that complex, I've got absolutely no hope of telling whether they've screwed the thing back together in the right order or not....

I've been following your smoke and apparent turbo problems, and certainly hope this new fix will once and for all sort it out.

Still amazes me the way they pull the bodies these days.

Yeah, it takes about two hours to unhook and unbolt everything and off she comes.
Interesting talking to the techs - there have been lots of cases of these 3.0 litre twin turbo diesels in the 4 and RRS blowing smoke, all over the country apparently...they've swapped out turbos in scores of cars, and this is the first time they've tracked it down to that scavenger pump fault.

Maybe they could have saved themselves a helluva lot of turbo changes...

Greg, did your car blow smoke all the time or only when accelerating hard?

You've got me thinking.......I noticed the other day for the first time a big puff of smoke when I switched to the tranny sport mode and gave it a bootfull for an overtaking manoeuvre.

As mentioned before, I must be one of the lucky ones. Approaching 100K and no problems.
Having said this, you would think that if it was so wide spread, there would be a recall.

    Cheers, Craig

Yep, sounds about right. Mine was only blowing smoke when the second turbo kicked in under sharp acceleration. Then if I tried it again right away, nothing happened. Turns out the oil is pooling, getting burnt out the back in a big puff, and that clears it until it pools up again, which takes a little while under normal driving conditions.
You might want to talk to your dealer about it, and relay my experience to them. You can talk to Barbagallo's chief technician, Cecil - he's across the whole history of my car.

Craig I don't think it's universal. It was a specific problem with the scavenger pump on my car, there was a vacuum leak somewhere so it wasn't able to suck up the pooling oil. But I'm sure my dealer will be reporting the problem and the solution to LRA, I'm sure they'll be delighted as those pumps are sure to be a helluva lot cheaper than replacing turbos all the time.

Your's is the only one I've read about that started producing the smoke well after the 2nd turbo started operating, with the others all producing smoke the moment the 2nd turbo became operational. Perhaps a faulty scavenger pump is not generally the cause. Good to get your vehicle's problem solved and much better to be the pump than the block or the heads.
