RRS V Discovery 4

Hi All,

I've been looking at picking up a diesel Discovery 4 around the 2012 - 2014 mark, and then had the realisation that if they're mechanically similar to the RRS why don't I include those in my search. I've been looking mainly at the 2012 RRS, 6 speed 3ltr TD. I'm no full on off roader, but I am a keen fisherman and mountain biker so want some decent off road ability but won't be full on 4x4'ing (but I guess you never know!).

My question to this crew is do you see any downsides or upsides to getting a RRS over a Disco? I must say they are a very good looking car, seem excellently spec'ed compared to the disco and from what I can see share capabilities. Running costs similar? Parts? Anything else I should consider?

Also a real numpty question but could you fit 2 mountain bikes comfortably inside with the back seats down? I have an Xtrail now and take the front wheel off and just slide them in upright so presume a RRS can handle that.

Finally, and yep I've searched, I see a lot come with 20inch wheels. Any decent AT tyres work on those?

The simple answer is if you want to carry boxy stuff go the D4 - the RRS is shorter, shorter wheelbase and the rear door is sloped restricting carrying bulky stuff. While I am sure bikes might fit inside, it will not be a good fit. With the earlier RRS you could carry bulky stuff with the top rear tail gate open but as the later versions have a one piece rear tailgate is not feasible.

Also if you are looking at a later L320 RRS go the TDV8.

So if carrying stuff go the D4.

I think two mountain hikes would.fit fine. The thing to look out for is the front leg room. If you have all of them down, the middle seat belt retractor means the passenger seat has to move forward. But you can selectively put seats down so this might not be a problem...it has been a while since I have had them down...

There are 20 inch AT tyres and you can use a higher profile such as 275/45 instead of 275/40... Still 20 inch but probably good enough for general tracks and fine on the sand.
