    RR Sport- off road?

    Hi there,

    New here and never owned a Range rover(!), although my father -in-law has a 2006 RR.

    I currently own a 2004 Toyota Prado, which has done me just fine, but I am thinking about up-grading to something more upmarket. I love the look of the Range Rover Sport.

    We really only go off road twice per year. Usually a long weekend trip on beaches or to somewhere like the Flinders Ranges, and maybe a 1-2 week trip to the Victorian High Country (but nothing too serious) for example.

    So far I have found the Prado more than capable for my needs. Can I expect the same off road performance from a RR Sport? It looks very low to the ground. I presume the air-suspension will give it decent lift for off road?

    Any thoughts? Cheers

    As far as the chassis goes the RR-Sport is a Discovery 3, and these are generally considered to be (or very close to) the best offroad vehicle you can buy in standard form, certainly way ahead of the Prado.

    The only reservation about the RR Sport would be the standard tyres - these are not really ideal for offroad.

    Correct John !
    The RRS is slightly shorter than the D3 in the chassis which gives some theoretical advantages.
    Although most of us have an extra dedicated set of off-road rims and tyres for more arduous conditions none of us fitted them for this "Heritage Horses, Huts and Hydro" weekend ! So we were very careful of our rims and tyres....especially the 20"

    You can't expect the same offroad performance from a RR Sport.

    You can expect vastly superior offroad performance coupled with vastly superior onroad performance!

    A RR Sport is so much better than a Prado they really shouldn't be mentioned in the same paragraph!

    RRS off road is better than I expected.

    With good tyres RRS is simply superb off-road, in fact breathtaking. The only thing is I really worry about scratching the bodywork. I suppose I'll get over it.

    Like the Disco3 you have to remember to take of the extra bit of plastic on the front covering the recovery point, or it will go missing anyway.

    BTW: towing a heavy camping trailer and got 7.9 l/100k on road and 9.8 l/100k off-road in my TDV6

    Oh no, looks like i need a new 4x4!!

    Yes my prado (ahem cough cough) is covered in scratches down the sides from scrub...would hate to do that to a brand new RRS

    I've seen advertised peel off plastic covers for the sides of your car that protect from such scratches.
