mystery thumping sound from front suspension

    Hi Folks

Bit of a mystery thumping sound coming from the passenger side front suspension. Its not there all the time, just when I go over small imperfections in the road, like rumble strips or uneven concrete. Had it in a mates garage last night and threw it up on the lift, checked all the suspension bolts for tightness etc.

In fact I've replaced all of the lower and upper suspension arms on both sides, and even the anti roll bar is less than a year old. Recently, I also replaced the lower ball joints. The tyres are balanced and the tracking is bang on, being calibrated about 2 months ago.

I suspect it might be in the shock, but am unsure how to check this, its not like you can actually bounce the front of the car up and down to check it, and I don't fancy spending £800 or more to find out that not the problem.

Anyone any similar experiences they might be able to share. Its funny, last night when we were checking it in the garage, driving back and forward over some small lenghts of angle iron to replicate the "thump", I could actually feel a viration coming up through the gear shift handle, not sure if that means anything, but I'll throw it out there for what its worth.

    Thanks Gang

Not realy sure but many years ago in a Holden V8 had a simular thump that was felt through gear lever . Turned out to be engine & gearbox mounts. As you have replaced most everthing except shocks. It may be something to look at . Engine Mounts etc that is.

Take a good look at the bushes on the suspension. They work very hard and wear out much faster than the earlier model Rangies.
How is it driving on the road? pulling to one side? Any vibration at speed?

    +1 for Gary's theory.

I had a similar situation about a year back that turned out to be a cactus engine mount. Replaced and lo, no more things that go Bump!

Do you also notice a resonant vibration, of sorts, just above idle?

If so, check (or have a professional check) the engine mounts. The rangie ones are a vacuum controlled hydraulic system and they can be faulty without showing outward evidence. Though splits or breaks in the vacuum lines, where the lines are visible, tend to be pretty obvious.

    Cheers,
    Iain

    Thanks Lads

That mate of my who has a garage (always a good thing to have when you have an attention seeking L322) has suggested throwing it up on one of those rolling road lifts they use for testing, to see if we can try and identify where the "thump" is coming from. Hoping to do that next week. Will keep in mind what you have said.

Sorry, forgot to mention, car is driving fine, no vibrations/shimmys when driving, also good under braking.
