    03 model L322 TD6 Odometer

My odometer seems to be running slow i.e. under reading distance travelled. Being LCD screen what could cause this? Jim

Is the speedo out as well? I would have thought they would both use the same input?
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Hi Jim,

Are the tyres very new or slightly different from the placard (e.g. 265/60R18)?

These subtle differences can impact the odometer and make it read less than actual distance. The odometers are usually calibrated around an "average" partly worn tyre rolling diameter.

Never been entirely convinced of the accuracy of the speedo/odometer on mine. I know they tend to make the speedo error on the low side so as not to cause you to speed (e.g. 110 read, 105 actual). If yours is like this then the odometer will read low to actual travelled distance. They both take their inputs from the wheel sensors so if there's a slight error in one then there'll be a corresponding error in the other.

A curious thing with mine is that the speedometer reads low but the overspeed alarm is spot on by GPS comparison. If I set the alarm at 110kph the speedo will show 115kph but the GPS will show exactly 110kph as the alarm is tripped. All very strange.

Unless you plan on using the odometer in place of a Halda (or similar) trip meter for mapping, or rally, purposes I wouldn't worry too much unless it's out by some ridiculous percentage.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Iain

I have noticed mines out - its got good tread at correct factory size, and seems to show about 117-118 on speedo to GPS showing 110.

Tried it on several GPS's now with same result, also with the speed camera's on the VIC freeway between Melbourne and Ballarat.

I would estimate its about 3-4 k's out at 60 as well.

    Hey there guys,

Just a word of caution about checking your odometer against GPS. Make sure your GPS is measuring distance travelled, distance over ground, or track distance. A lot (i.e. most) measure distance to/from a point in a straight line and may not represent the actual distance by roadway.

Better to find a straight (or as close as possible) piece of highway for 2 or 3 kms and then check your odometer against your GPS.

If this is what you've done then you do indeed have a great problem. If not, try it and see if the error is somewhat less.

If you are checking speed then most car speedometers read higher than actual speed. The cynic in me suggests that this is so car makers don't get sued for speeding fines.

JSP, your indication of 117/118 for an actual 110 is still within the ADR tolerances but probably higher than I would have expected. Mine is out by about 5kph at 100. That is, reads 105kph at 100kph actual.

Not a fan of those highway distance markings. Especially as I have travelled a number of roads with signs saying 10km to the next town and about 1km later passed another saying 11km to the same town while I was travelling toward the town! Whatever they use to measure distance is certainly not DGPS accurate.

    Just my 2c worth.

    Cheers,
    Iain

My TD6 is a bit like yours Iain. Speedo reads 107/108 , Actual speed checked on geelong freeway & GPS 100. Suspension doesn't lower until speedo 108.
Also check on Ballarat freeway & GPS at 110 speedo read 117/118
Both speed detection zones & GPS were within 1 km of each other
Speed alert set at 120 but doesn't go off till speedo doing 126+. Yes just a bit on the strange side

Mine speedo is about 5-6% out, not checked the odometer.

I have not done this on the RR yet, but in our VW you can get live speed reading via the diagnostic gear – guess what. Speedo is about 5% out but the ecu speed is bang on! So the car has an accurate speed but the instrument panel displays a modified reading which is with in ADR specs…

When I get some time I’ll do the same test on the RR.
