    Oil for the Rangie

    This may have another thread running somewhere, but I thought I'd share this info. Coming up to the first service on the Rangie (TD6) and had a look at oil prices... Castrol edge at $85 for 5 litres - I don't think so...

    I had a mate of mine (A diesel Mechanic who owns his own workshop) do a bit of research. He works on trucks 99% of the time, and has been using QP Lubricants oils for some time - He now has a band of loyal followers of this brand of oil that won't use anything else. I leave out all the blurb, but his customers are stoked with the oil these guys supply, and my mate is very fussy and wouldn't use it if it didn't cut the mustard.

    He contacted them and they blend a 5W40 (Fully synthetic) oil that exceeds the factory spec. This is part of the reply I received - The Only product as close to the 0W-40 Spec we blend is the 5W-40 API SN/CF (fully synthetic) which is far above the min requirement of API SJ/CD & ACEA A3/B3 has been also superseded by ACEA C3-2010. That is the same spec as the Castrol oil.

    Price wise, I can get 20 ltrs (smallest quantity they supply) for about the same price as 10Ltrs of Castrol Edge, so - 2 oil changes for the price of 1!

    PS - I'm in no way involved with QP Lubricants - just putting this out there for others. If you are interested, I can point you in the right direction.

    I am probably using the wrong stuff, I have had my car just over 6 months now and done 4 oil changes, I have used Nulon 5w40, mobil 5w40 and the last few times penrite hpr5.

    Sprint auto parts had a super special on the penrite stuff for $40 for 5 litres so I bought half a dozen of them.

    They all seem to meet the specs, and are all fully synthetic. As I say I am probably using the wrong stuff. I need to start looking around and reading some of your threads to do a auto fluid flush.

    You may be using the right stuff - I'm sure there are plenty of oils out there that meet the spec, but most threads I have read recommend the Castrol Edge - but I just can't bring myself to spend that much on oil... $40 for 5 ltrs sounds a lot more realsitic. Read the long running thread here on the trannie fluid - there is plenty there on the right stuff to use, and it is a lot more critical in the auto, than in the engine...

    Just thought I'd post an update on the new oil. Very impressed so far. The engine runs so much smoother than it did before, and believe it or not, the fuel economy has improved a heap. Before the oil change, overall average was 11.4, and on the highway dropped to as low as 9.8. We did a run to the outlaws the other weekend - 800KM round trip - all highway and averaged 9.1! - the same as I got with my crappy new dunny door driving to Adelaide and back last week. Now SWMBO has been going to work and back for a few weeks, the average overall is now 10.8. One happy camper here.
