    td-6 gear change problem

    Good day again.
The Gearbox on my TD-6 does not change as smooth as it used to.
Its noticably jerky changing from 3rd to 2nd, also when coasting without my foot on the pedal, it seems to be shunting up and down the gearbox.
Its using more fuel than previously, especially around town.
I had the last service two thousand km ago.
    Any ideas
    Thanks Paul

Just read your previous post, I would get the battery replaced then see what happens, when my battery got low 2-3 gear changes got rough, but all good with new battery. This is a common problem with ECU controlled autos in LR vehicles.
If this does not help the we start looking at the GM gremlins in these autos, due to loosing pressure, the extra fuel consumption would come from having to keep revs higher to maintain speed/pressure in the box. Have you tried it in sport mode ? sometimes the added pressure for these shifts will give smooth changes. It might sound silly but, have you had the codes read or updated recently ? In the last service was the auto oil and filter done as well ? I hope it's only a monor problem !

    TD-6 GEARBOX

    Thanks Laurie
The battery is three years old and seems to have plenty of life left in it.
No I havent had the codes /faults read lately
I actually had a new engine fitted with the last service, I would have thought all the filters would have been changed,it was brand new from Land Rover off the palet.

Paul did you get a new motor or gearbox ? I have not heard of any diesel having major problems, except in one case the turbo blew and it injested some crap. Just because the battery starts ok, it can still be a problem. it might be worth getting the battery load tested just to be sure. 3 year old battery should still be good though, even on these power hungry beasts.

    TD-6 GEARBOX

    Hi Laurie
It was a new motor, using the existing gearbox.
I will get the baterry tested, just as a process of elimination.....
I saw one of the threads about gearbox flushing,do you know what that achieves ?
    Cheers Paul

If it's flushed properly. all the old ATF in the box, lines etc is replaced by a machine thats hooked up to the gearbox. This uses extra ATF and is not that cheap,( the ATF for these boxes is one of the most expensive out there )BUT it will promote longevity in a any good auto.
. Usally when the oil is replaced there is old fluid left in the system , most notably in the torgue converter.

There are conflicting views if the oil " smells burnt" in these autos, some say to change fluid will move the deposits to vital areas and cause bigger trouble. The other view is new ATF will help with prolong the auto. Personally I'd flush it as long as there were no metal parts in the pan !
