L322 intermittently into limp home mode

    Hi all,

New to this and already looking for some help !

2002 4.4HSE which has 190,000km on the clock.

New radiator installed 4 months ago.
Gearbox appears to slip into limp home mode when the vehicle has been working a bit - traffic, warm weather etc.

Gearbox replaced (recon) 2 months ago.

Problems have continued and its been in and out of local auto trans shop on a number of occasions and in desperation (and following weary advice from the auto guys) replaced all four tyres with brand new Conti's last week.

Guess what - bit of traffic last week (approx an hour) on a long run down South and it spent about 40km stuck in third gear but eventually slid back into 5th.

Any advice - invested too much and love it too much to want to give up but already $8k down !

    Thanks

Dont quote me on this but I just had a full rebuild on my 04 TD6(GM box) and there was a need to "Remove adaptive learning from transmission ECU" and remove all exsisting faults from engine, transmission and transfere case ECU`s.(Thats what the invoice said)
The guy who did my work specializes in Landrover/Rangerover, so he had all the software, this might be something to look into?
Wouldnt have thought that the tyres had anything to do with it.

If there are no fault codes showing ( updates done ? ), I would guess it's a blocked radiator. The bottom 8 tubes supply cooling for the auto trans fluid. Check the drain tap and check for the amount of fluid released, if little comes out this should be your problem.
In my opinion when trans was replaced they should have flushed the system, I would be bringing this to their attention. Just found Tech Bulletin
    No: LTB00080
    15 August 2007.

I can't link it here at work; if you can't find it, I'm sure some other member will post it.
    Good luck with your car

    Summiitt,

Thanks - will disucss with auto trans guys.

Tyres - what can i say - the rears werer compleltly knackered anyway and probably a sign of signs of desperation all round but does mean I have a pair of nearly new Nexen's to sell !

So you are clearing the fault each time the ignition is turned off and the RR restarted?
Tires? sounds like the Auto repairers are clutching at straws here. The trans wont know what tires it is turning through the transfer case! Only way this will cause a problem is if you have different size tires on each corner, and this would create a problem for the diffs and the transfer case.
I would have thought a diagnostic tool would give some pretty good idea of what the problem is.
Warranty claim here for sure i would have thought.

RR P38 - um not sure - would not know what to do - know the faults reported through diagnostics get cleared each time they are downloaded by mechanics but not doing anything myself - pretty clueless - what should i be doing ?

Tyres - clucthing at straws - yes - Conti's on back were in pretty poor conditon and arguement was that Nexen's werer enaerly new and that may be causing the problem.

When you get the limp home mode problem.
If you stop the RR turn off the ignition pull the key out.
Restart the RR and drive off does the limp home mode go away?
If you leave the RR to cool down does the limp home mode clear?

I'd be suspecting the trans cooler that is mounted on to the radiator rather than the radiator itself.

Replacing it and the trans fluid lines cured an occasional trans overheat warning and associated drop into limp mode on our previous 02.

RR P38 - limp home remains active even if I stop, remove key and then restart. Typically has reverted following colling off period but did so whilst on the run last Friday - guess that's the benefit of low traffic, constant spoeed and a bit of English style weather.
