    04 HSE "What to look for"?????

    Hi all!

    I'm in the market for an 04 HSE v8 and was wondering if there is anything obvious or not so obvious to look for when buying?

    Make sure all electrics work And has a full service history. Drive a few different ones and go from there

    If you are buying a V8 why not go a Vogue? Pretty much the same price with a lot more options.

    You can get a good one for 30k now..very nice

    Good luck with it.. took me nearly a year to find mine but being a diesel it was alot harder to find a good one.

    I didn't think it was all that much more of a car?
    I'm struggling to find a few in vicco for $30,000.
    I was more interested in saving a few bucks towards an injected gas system than heated seats and sat/nav tv. But you're welcome to encourage me otherwise

    Hi Dan, whatever the asking price is, you can be sure you will be able to bargain off a LOT from that. These things are hard to shift, and most spend months on the market before selling, so haggle hard. Start at least $10K below the asking price, and go from there. I got nearly $7K off the asking price on mine - but I ended up needing that for the new transmission it needed soon afterwards... but that's another story...

    Thanks for all the advice. Looked at some and although they look ok on the skin...........underneath lies a different story @ 170.000 klms they do seem to have a fair amount of wear and leaks. One which was advertised as "you won't find another one better" came with a current rwc and had a leaking rear main dripping on the ground and cracked suspension bushes! & fairly grubby interior. Just out of interest what do you think a lr dealer would charge to do a rear main????? Kind Regards Dan

    Not sure, but with a hoist, the trannie comes out easily - I watched the trannie specialist pull mine in less than an hour when it was repaired, so with that, and removing the flex plate, and the old seal, I would think a GOOD mechanic could do the whole job in around maybe 5 hours with all the right tools, plus the cost of the seal.

    Only a guess, and knowing an LR dealer, they would tell you it is a much bigger job than it is...

    very important - make sure it has had the tranny oil changed. Ideally, before 80k.

    I was looking at purchasing one of these - I didn't but in retrospect I wish I had. There are a couple of rubber "breather pipes" at the back of the engine - I can't remember too much about them but apparently it is critical to keep them clean/replaced. If they block this can damage the engine. Someone with better kniwledge might expand on this in some detail.
