    l322 td6 engine problems

my td6 just started to leak oil and blow smoke the smoke stops if you drive it without the oil cap it has alot of crankcase pressure its constant pressure not chugging as if it has dropped a cilinder or valves no noticable loss in performance or any unusual noises from the motor the car was driven with the oil cap off to check if the turbo was the problem and seems once you reduce the crank case pressure stops burning oil . the pressure in the crankcase makes it hard to remove the oil cap . have seen some threads on egr valves could this be the problem . the motor is running smooth no rought idle etc through to red line

Sounds like your crankcase breather filter is blocked. This could lead to turbo failure as well, so I would repair it ASAP. There is a cheap upgrade for the filters that don't block up. Can't remember the part number off the top of my head, but they are on ebay.

    Others will know.

Oh, and welcome to the forum.

    Cheers - Gav

    Yeah,

    What he said. Thanks Gav

The symptoms you describe sound like what would be experienced with a blocked crankcase filter. You seem to bleed oil from every non pressure tight part of the engine. Is your oil dipstick dislodged or leaking? This is one of the classic signs.

Most dealers have tended not to replace these as, up until very recently I believe, it wasn't even on the maintenance schedule. This appears to be another of those little oversights like the transmission that is "filled for life"!

I would be checking this crankcase breather filter first. If it is seriously blocked this may ultimately lead to oil starvation of the turbo.

These filters are cheap to purchase from the old blighty (about eight quid I think last I looked) and straight forward to replace (or be replaced by service folk). You can even find them on FleaPay

There are some here who replaced the original filter with the BMW scavenge system, used on the same engine in the BMW cars, with good results (so far). This is a direct, bolt on swap. Unlike the original filter LR system, the BMW system does not have a filter to gum up and need to be changed regularly. It uses a different approach (spin separation?) to solve the problem. The BMW part number is 11127799224, for the whole assembly. Just the separator piece is 11127799367, but it seems that only some of the original LR filter assemblies will accept installation of just this part only.

    Happy hunting.

I agree with Iain & Gav about crankcase breather. This is all you should need.

    BMW 1/3/5/SERIES/X3 OIL SEPARATOR/CRANKCASE BREATHER - 11127799367 FEBI 34830 | eBay

Do it urgently. If this part doesn't fit your housing I have a spare housing as I bought full kit and didn't need it

Blimme, 8 quid would be nice! I bought one last week and it cost me $93 NZD.

I must look into the BMW conversion because my local Land Rover guys said it was essential to change it regularly. With all the filters and oil even a home service is an expensive proposition. I guess that's the price you have to pay to drive the best 4WD in the world.

Order your parts from the UK. An entire filter kit is about $70 delivered IIRC.

There you go. Do the crankcase breather upgrade mentioned earlier and you're all set.

    Hi Landieman
I have done the vortex crank breather conversion on my TD6 and my parents FL1 TD4, fit and forget. I think it was just over $100 from Ebay.

For filters on my TD6 I use Milland who advertises on Trademe under BMW Diesel parts. Just make sure you cross reference your numbers as mentioning they are for a Land Rover spins him out a bit.

    Vortex Crank Breather BMW 1112 7 799 224
    Oil filter BMW 1142 2 247 392
    Air filter BMW 1371 2 247 444
    Diesel filter BMW 1332 7 787 825
