Thanks for posting, if you don't mind me asking what symptoms led you to the aux fan? Im thinking that mine doesn't work.
Thanks
Neil
So I managed to source a new OEM spec Aux fan (for a BMW E53) and today was the day to fit it. I had previously removed the old assembly, so I knew what was involved. It's not a hard job, just lots of stuff to come off.(see pictures below)
I was starting to get concerned about the stress on the aircon in city traffic as the weather heats up, and also the cooling system.
Anyway, I can get more if anyone is after one (see the markets section under engine ancillaries)
There are aftermarket ones available for the E53, but these have an external control module, and won't bolt in to the L322 cowling, so I went OEM.
One thing that RAVE doesn't say is remove the whole fog lamp assemblies (3 screws each)before re-fitting the bumper as this makes the bumper HEAPS easier to get back on!
Cheers,
Fraser

Thanks Fraser - to add to what Neil has asked, do you know when the fan should operate? Does it work just on temperature, or when the AC is on, or a combination of both? I have never noticed mine working - do they make much noise, or would the engine driven fan drown it out?
At least my engine driven fan is sort of under control. It doesn't run all the time now, which is nice, and doesn't wake the neighbours up when SWMBO drives off in the morning.

Neil and Gav, the Auxiliary fan as far as I know works with 2 scenarios, but it's primary purpose is to get rid of heat from the aircon condenser in hot weather at slow road speeds. It's variable speed, dependent on the pressure in the aircon system so in cooler weather you won't hear it as it will just spin slowly. It will usually come on about 5-20 seconds after you put on the aircon, and you will see it spinning.
It's second function is as extra cooling for the engine, but as I understand it, it VERY rarely does this as it is essentially there as an extreme measure in this role.
I have also read that in warmer conditions, when you turn off the engine, there is an electric coolant pump that energises and circulates coolant through the engine, whilst this fan runs too cool the engine to a preset temp, to stop heatsoak up into the head.
They are a quite common failure nowadays, and I wanted mine fixed before this summer as I'm towing a caravan up and around bright this summer.
There is a pretty good description in RAVE about this fan, and unfortunately they have the speed controller built in to the motor, and are given a 12v all the time, and a skinny 3rd wire carries a PWM signal that "tells" it what speed to run at.
I was quoted $1400 for one from a dealer!!!!!
Thanks fraser great help. Hope you have a great trip :-)
Fraser, I'm new to the site and already have read some interesting posts... I noticed your post on replacing the auxiliary fan of the TD6... Do you happen to know the part number of the OEM spec Aux fan (for a BMW E53) you used?
I'm going through the same problem and need to replace the fan on my MY 2006 TD6...
Thanks in advance for your reply and help!!
Kind regards,
Mike.
