Thread: Electrical issues - I think...

Well, after having a faultless run on our trip, the Rangie decided it didn't want to go any more... Started fine this morning, but was making an odd noise - couldn't put my finger on it, the engine seemed to be running fine, but the noise was coming out from lower down - not a nasty, deadly engine noise, more of something rubbing on something... SWMBO drove it to the local shop to get some lunch on her way to work, and then nothing would work... Dash lights come up, but it won't crank.

So I waved it off for a safe journey on a tilt tray to Romsey for diagnosis, as I had issues with my IIDtool getting any faults from the engine ECU - can't even see it with the tool, which doesn't bode well.

There was a slight electrical smell - anyone had a starter **** itself on one of these? (TD6)

Battery appeared to be a bit low which explains to stupid fault codes coming up in the last few weeks. They have changed the battery, but she still won't crank.

I'll post an update when I know more, but if anyone has any ideas, that would be great.

At least it had the courtesy to break down at the shops close to home, and not in the middle of Dangalli Conservation Park last week...

Well, I'm rapidly working through things that go 'bang' at about 200,000KM.... Got the car back - all good, SWMBO got almost home when 'POP - HISS - WHINE'. And low power...

Took it for a drive myself and it sounds like a boost leak... So out I go this morning and pull all the boost hoses off hoping to find a nice easy find and fix...

Got all the hoses off - they are all in great condition, turbo is also fine - pretty happy about that, but that leaves only one culprit... The inter cooler, which I will go and pull out after lunch. There are two special style of 'O' rings that attach the hoses (through a boss) to the inter cooler. One of these looks like it could have been leaking a bit, and I will replace them, but nothing bad enough to cause the issue I have.

There is evidence of minor damage and corrosion on the front of the inter cooler, so I'm pretty sure that's the culprit.

Not bad price either - $223 plus postage... Guess what one is worth locally - go on, have a stab...

$880.00 and they have to order one from the UK anyway... It's not a part the hold in stock, so none of the usual arguments can apply about the cost of holding stock, etc, etc - if I can get it for $223 then what can they buy it for? Maybe I should buy a couple of them... AND they quoted me 1 to 2 weeks for delivery. I'll order one now myself and I should have it Monday or Tuesday...
