    L322 Petrol Engines 2002 Onwards

    In another thread it was mentioned that the L322 BMW V8 is a non serviceable engine because getting parts for them can be an issue.

    This comment led me to this discussion point of which the results may be of some communal value.

    For one reason or another all these L322 petrol engines from 2002 until the present day are going to face a rebuild situation in their life with some being needed earlier in their expected service life than others.

    Some points to ponder are –

    Given a history of good maintenance what is the expected service life of the various L322 petrol engines? What issues can be expected in the way of rebuilds – aka parts problems, too expensive to rebuild, no-one willing or able to do the remove, repair and replace work. Is anyone offering c/o rebuilt engines off the shelf? Is there anything else which should be included in this discussion.

    Rebuilt cylinder heads would appear to be readily available.
    All of the ancillaries water pump alternator coolers etc, are all well available.

    I can find several complete engines in the UK with 100,000km on them for less than $1500.

    Or you can get a remanufactured engine 2500 pounds;

    BMW 545i 5 SERIES ENGINE,4.4 N62B44A, V8 PETROL-REMANUFACTURED | eBay

    A brand new engine looks to be about $12000

    I remember reading (cant remember were lol) that although land rover and BMW will tell you they are not interchangeable ..... They are !! Something to do with keeping the land rover engine for a couple of spare bits that need swapping .....(cam chain cover if memory serves correct)
    but you wont be able to run the engine at 45 degrees incline / on side incline (cant remember which) if you use BMW motor as it will run dry on oil .....
    wish I could help more .... Please note I am not stating the N62 mentioned but the BMW M62 !!

    It is my understanding that the L322 02-04 uses the same engine as the BMW X5, amongst others, given that this car is essentially an X5 with a different torque converter, and dual range box, and different front diff (correct me if I am wrong anyone). And I think the straight sixes are the only ones BMW places on the slant, I think all the V8's are vertical.

    Would like to know more about the differences between the N62 and M62 motors, and how interchangeable they are.

    The BMW petrol V8 when fitted to the 4x4 X5 has a bit of a reputation over here for being a weak engine. Plenty of them with head gasket problems.

    Difficult to fix properly as the engine does not like to be even a little over heated. Rebuilding is not easy as there are only about 4 places in the UK who can do it. This is due to specialist tools required from BMW and their cost. Also it is expensive to do the heads or worse still remove the engine due to all the parts that have to be removed.

    A little strange as the same engine in the cars does not seem to have the issues. Must be something to do with changes made to accommodate the extra driven wheels.
