    Hi all

where are you getting your trans filters from?

Previously I've taken it in to be done but plan to DIY over the xmas break, along with the considerable list of jobs I now have

    thanks

There are 3 different filters for the 5L40E transmission. Think Commodore is different to R.R.

Found this on Ebay. Not connected

mmm. I have been taking it to Western Suburbs Automatics (BNE) for the last 5 years, he always orders the parts as they are used so he always has one in stock. So everytime I've been in the waiting room he comes in, gets on the phone and places an order for various bits/parts and a "5L40 filter" that he's just put in my car. Never called it anything special just 5L40.

That link is for our mate Rhys, he should know. Wonder what the difference is?

Thought I’d give an update for those considering DIY trans fluid and filter changes.

    Do it, it’s easy.

    1. have a cordless with a 10mm socket on the end of a 100mm extension, it makes getting the 20 sump pan retaining bolts out much faster, they are not tight (should only be 10nm) but you cant turn them by hand and after you drain and have fluid on your hands they are a ***** with a socket.

    2. have a 17mm hex spanner (with 6 full sides) if you can for the filler bung. This is a really soft metal and the “professional” that serviced my trans last time did it up stupidly tight. The 12 point ring spanner just took the corners off, and there’s no room for a socket. The bung has a rubber O ring and the manual states tighten to 20nm. This was the only hickup I had and the local repco had a “dog bone” spanner for $10 that fits in and has the 6 sides. Mine was way too tight, with the dog bone I was really leaning on it, so hopefully you won’t have this issue.

    3. after you drop the fluid, let it sit and drain for several hours. Because of point 2 and then a stop for long lunch, and afternoon tea, and friends dropping in ect ect, it was (unintentionally) about 5 hours between the time I dropped the fluid and put the pan back on.
What I noticed was that with the initial drain and pan removal, I collected about 5L of fluid. After the car sat for 5 hours with a collection pan catching the constant drips, there was about 6.7L. Chatting with the neighbour, he explains how the TC will drain back but it’s slow, so DIY got out nearly 2L extra fluid out than the trans specialist service.

    4. have diagnostic gear to get the trans fluid temperature (I have IIDTool). Full procedure is in RAVE but the fluid level needs to be checked while temp is 35-45degC

    5. If possible, have someone who knows what they are looking for to check the fluid and pan once it’s off. Interesting to hear what he was looking for.

I don’t have a pump, because there is 2 of use, a funnel into plastic hose works well. Route the hose down beside the engine, fill from above – easy & no mess.

AND finally. I got the “Range Rover” filter from Sydney in the link above. It has exactly the same numbers on it as the “Commodore” filter that the trans specialist fitted last service, so I don’t know what the difference is.

The filter in the "Caddy" 5L50E I fitted is identical to that in the old RR 5L40.

    And trans fluid?
Holden stipulate ATF IV, and the oil they sell/use in Holden branded bottle is mineral based!
I've used Nulon full synthetic; it seems gearchanges are more sudden when cold, but all good after about 10km.

The fluid discussion was done to death several years ago.

There will be a GM licence number on the bottle that matches the GM document that Daniel posted on here. NEVER USE ANYTHING ELSE.

I'm using a Penrite product. Can never feel gear changes.

    hey chay
I get my filter from the auto trans shop for less than supercheap. He orders filters for a 5L40e from his supplier, no mention of target vehicle. I've seen several now (including one from the UK supposedly genuine) and they all have the same numbers stamped on them.
