    TD6 catalytic converter

Hi Gents, after some advice please.

I have an annoying rattle coming from the large cat converter, like the guts has fallen apart.

What’s the general consensus on removal or replacement of the catalytic converter?

    Thanks H

According to the repair manual " Internally the rear silencer assembly is divided into two independent silencers each with its own tailpipe. The tailpipes are bent downwards and not normally visible.
Although supplied as a one-piece assembly, in service, sections of the system can be replaced individually. "

I've never seen after market replacement, But the price of the genuine muffler in the UK is between A$785 to A$1040 Might only be 1 x silencer that's stuffed, but I don't know if you can replace one only ?

Don't forget they are a stainless system hence the cost.

So I would be personally getting a price on a 1 into 2 x pipe custom system fitted

Thanks Laurie, but it's not the silencer at the back. Noise is definitely coming from the cat under the driver's foot well floor.

I would still price the genuine and after market replacement cat, my opinion a A/M cat would be a relatively cheap and easy replacement looking at the system as it's a straight pipe replacement. There are plenty of Hi-flow converters starting from just over $100 + fitting, just have to find the right size/model.
But the RR being pre 05 DO you have to have a Cat in Oz ? if not a hi=flow hotdog muffler would be a cheap and easy replacement !!!

    This is what I've found.

Legally it has to have a cat, but plenty of places offered to swap it for a pipe.

Quoted $190 for an after market "high flow" cat fitted. A lot less than I was expecting.

There's cats, and there's cats- as I found out when I had the ones on my old 4.0 P38 changed by a certain Mr. Muffler. They fitted cheapies & the car was far noisier forever after, ruined its character. I'm wondering if the same thing has happened to my Jolly Green Giant (TD6), it's bloody noisy too- or are all the 3.0 diesels like that? Moral of my story: get good cats, preferably from someone whose surname isn't coincidentally the same as their occupation.

Is that the whole system, or just the cat & rear silencer? 'Cos the pipes between the two on my 3.0 look a bit rusty.
