    Unhappy FUEL PROBLEM

    Hi All
    Looking for some help re: my TD6. When I reach approx half tank of fuel car stops.
    After cranking over few minutes starts again. If I fill tank no problem till half tank again.
    Guys I took it to dropped tank said no obstructions. However, they said the O ring form crossover pipe to sender unit was suspect. Replaced sender unit and pipe. Left their workshop and headed towards Tenterfield on a trip. Guess what car stopped with caravan in tow and showed sign Fuel injection system.
    Got out locked car to reset electrics and she started but no power. Lifted bonnet and could see air in fuel line. Eventually she started and off we went with no problems. Filled tank cause now gun shy with half tank (Bottom Half).

    It sounds like the in-line fuel pump is on the way out If you do a search you will find more info about the pump and a replacement pump on E-bay at a good price.

    or the pump in the tank. The tank straddles the tail shaft and there is a pump to push fuel over the other side where the pick up is, it is only needed when below half.

    the inline pump is cheap and very common failure, replace it anyway. I paid $102 to have a spare one on hand, it took 3 days to arrive. I replaced mine 45k ago spare is wrapped up in the spare tyre well.

    Thinking out loud - Usually if the inline is buggered the ECU won't allow it to restart due to "insufficient low side pressure" no matter what how much fuel is in the tank. However, the internal pump will fail to supply the inline pump when the tank is low, but once the inline gets some fuel the pressure is OK. You say air in the line. If the inline is low on pressure there won't be air in the line, but there will be if the inline is not being fed fuel.

    So - internal pump or a leak between tank and inline (under suction when the inline is running) - but that would change with tank level.

    So - Internal transfer pump or loose pickup in the tank. Time to have a look inside the tank which is far less messy with a half or lower tank of fuel unfortunately. I still say replace the inline while you are at it - cheap and takes 10 mins.

    Angry Fuel Problem

    Many thanks Laurie for your reply. Now thinking seriously about inline pump after
    they had tank off and said problem was fixed. I don't think so.

    Fuel Problem

    Thanks a lot Harlie
    Will look at the inline now and hope to fix the problem. Very frustrating and annoying when the blokes who are supposed to know....DON"T.

    Your symptoms do make it sound like the in tank pump, not the inline pump. You don't need to drop the tank to get to it, there is an inspection hole in the car - remove the back seats, pull the carpet up and you'll see it. The in tank pump can still be running but not creating enough of a Venturi to draw the fuel from the passenger side of the tank.

    Easiest way to check is take it for a decent drive, then once you get home, pull the inspection covers on the tank. If it is lower on the pump side - drivers side than the passenger side, then you in tank pump is on the way out. Pulling the tank out won't prove anything and if that's what they did to check it, I wouldn't be running back there any time soon as they obviously don't know **** about these vehicles.

    Thumbs up Fuel Problem

    Hi Babs

    Your reply gives me confidence in what is being done now. We are at Ballina and the car is with a guy who only works on european cars. He said straight away it has to be in the tank and the last place should have replaced the pump.
    Needless to say the new pump arrives today and fingers crossed. A little gun shy
    now as not a good feeling pulling a 20ft caravan and suddenly running out of power with B doubles up your **** on a narrow road.
    Will update when I get going but many thanks to all replies, this forum is great.

    Hands up those among us who have found dealers or service centers to be lacking in knowledge. My problems with land rovers stopped when I started doing everything myself.

    Smile Fuel Pump Problem

    Thanks to all you boys who responded to my call for help!!!!!
    Can't say enough about the mechanic in Ballina by the name of Nick Barrett at
    European Autos.
    As soon as I told him my woes,he immediately said why didn't they replace the fuel pump.
    I waited 4 days for the pump to come up from Melbourne and to be fitted. Bingo problem solved. Car running like a dream and in hindsight can now relate little happenings that were warnings. The fuel gauge is working again and Nick said the last place who said they fixed the problem did not clear the memory and reset the computer. Mind you last place had the gear to do this as they only work on Landrovers....Bit of a worry.
    I am very grateful for the input you have given me. I have had three disco's but only owned the Rangie for 6 months and it is a whole new ball game that I am becoming familiar with.
