Well I didnt want to put an outdated system in my car so i went the whole hog and removed all of the old stuff (for sale on gumtree) and am going out on a limb with a new system. If you have a read and have any suggestions please feel free. Will endevour to post pictures.
Initially i wanted to have an ipad in the front with a Air Port Express hooked directly up to the amplifier in the back.. The advantage is that your technology would never go out of date as you would just get a new tablet etc as the come out. There were two problems with this:
1. The Air Port Express uses AC Power and unfortunately i got a noisy signal through the amp.
2. I would have to put a spliter between the 3.5 stereo jack and the amp as the amp takes front back and sub all as individual inputs.
The next idea was to run a full car PC which would be awesome... accept for the unfortunate lake of space (with out modifying the top dash) when it comes to mounting a decent screen. Basically i could have the best mini ITX in the world which all culminated in a poor resolution 10 inch screen. I did find there was enough space behind the stereo for an Mini ITX , and the old center speaker can be reamed out to accommodate a 120mm cooler for the PC all covertly covered by the center speaker grill.
The advantage was a stock look and all of the functionality of a full blown PC. Only down side was difficulty of integration with respect to a screen.
In the end I brought a surface Pro which will be for all intensive purposes free to move around the car. It will have a window mount navigation if it is needed although i really like my hand held, the old din slots are now a sandwich holder /surface holder. The surface will be plugged in to the sound blaster via the USB 3 port (alot of slack) to give the front rear and sub out puts. Extra hard drives will be in the old CD changer slot along with a WIFI router for media streaming. Internet will be via mobile hot spot from my phone. If my hard drives full of media are not to a passengers liking the can Bluetooth there own through the sound blaster line in which will have a black berry media gate way attached..
Downsides:
1. It does not look stock.
2. when mounted display will look out of place.
3. Surface has to be in the car to listen to music
Upsides:
1. It will sound better then any stock unit.
2. I can take the display with me.
3. Very easy to upgrade with new tech.
4. Gives the the frame work to make a integrated system down the track. (only need a decent screen to fit in and a Mini ITX can be installed in a matter of minutes)
5. I have a sandwich holder
To be installed
1. Surface 2 pro for the display.
2. Alpine PDX-V9 in place of the standard Amp
3. Sound Blaster X FI to go from the surface to the Amp (not sure where to mount it, i was thinking roof or dash next to my new lunch holder).
4. Focal 165 KRX-3 front and back to replace the stock units
5. WIFI Router so i can stream media rather then use the USB.
6. Blackberry media gate way (Glove Box top compartment)
Here is the work so far.

Well be keeping a close eye on this - looks like an interesting plan.![]()

Got the sound blaster today so I thought I would put a picture up of its location.
I really do not like the bottle holder on the passenger side in the center console, so it is a good thing it interfered with my wires from the sound blaster. I gutted it and made it in to a small storage area which fits my wallet and phone perfectly. The little silver hinges on the right side is what the lid of the old bottle holder sticks to so that, from the outside it looks stock. I put a small notch in the lid to allow for the cables to pass through un hindered.
Basically what the sound blaster means is I can wire up the rest of the car and put every thing back together save the doors as the speakers are not here yet. as can bee seen though the gear selector cover only has primer and the top piece has not been sanded and polished. The foundry finish piece underneath is not going to be painted.
I put the diagram up in another thread but it is probably better served here.

Does anyone have the coding information for the DSP for L322?
I've fitted one from BMW and need to check/change if needed.
Installs in the factory spot nicely
The Amp comes with a test certificate to state the actual wattage. Pretty impressed with the 48% over the specified RMS for the 4 channels. Also has a 5th channel for a sub if i want one down the track.
Ready for the second battery to go in and power the whole thing.
After the speakers get here and the whole system is tested the wiring will be streamlined. For now though its not to bad, the light gray on the bottom right are the signal wires from the front. I need to turn them into RCA, it was wired for the Australian version of the Amp which has 3.5 mm inputs accept that I ordered my Amp from America so i have RCA inputs :/.
The light purple is my accessories 12V which was stolen from the phone kit harness.
*** The colour combination of the wires at the amp are not the same as the colour combinations in the doors for the speakers ***** Always check for continuity.
These are the cables run to the front, there is:
Front Left and Right
Rear Left and Right
Sub Woofer
Surface Pro Charger
USB for the Sound Blaster.

Speakers are here!!
Unfortunetly the cross overs are bigger then I expected and I am/was struggling to find a place to mount them. I was thinking near the amplifier in the back on a custom bracket but I had no bracket or material to make one, and every car I have put cross overs in i have put them in the doors. Hindsight I probably should have and used the rear door ash tray lights the rear tweeter wires made my self a bracket and put them all in the back. Instead i cut the doors
.... the cross overs fit nicely and they can be adjusted from each door, but they are visible!!. I committed a while ago to modifying the car and not being to concerned about returning it to stock as I found it bogged me down alot and stopped me from scavenging parts, aka new speakers use existing mounts. I am writing this now and kicking my self for not just making a mounting tray in the back and putting them all there.. heat would be an issued but my doors would be intact... have a look at the photos..
The advantage is cooler amplifier bay in the back and less distance from each splitter to the speaker.
Disadvantages..
1. Doors are cut
2. Pre existing wiring would have done the front perfectly and the back 2/3 of the way, could have just cut the back ones(who uses the rear map pockets anyway)
3. More power running through the existing woofer wire then if I had the splitters near the amp.
On a lighter note the Amp wiring is neatened up, Surface Pro charger and NFC receiver USB are in.
