    Inlet fouling

    Good afternoon,

I have the inlet manifold off to clean it out as my egr is finally gone. What is the best stuff to get the gunk off that will not damage the components on the engine side of the manifold?

    Regards,

I stuck mine in a mates spin wash at his workshop for an hour and they came out looking like new.

What components can be damaged if it is off the car? Assuming you talking the TD6 here? If your doing it in the driveway, I'd just use degreaser, water and dry it off with compressed air.

    Thanks Guys,

I am wanting to go the whole hog and clean the pipes on the engine side that have a 2mm + coating all the way down to the engine.. Carby cleaner it is..I am a little concerned about the accumulation of crap on top of the valves before i get a chance to start it.

Also I have an interesting development with the old EGR valves. It is not that expensive to buy a straight through pipe. I personally just got a piece of straight pipe and capped the exhaust at the manifold. Anyway, the EGR controller uses a vacuum line spliced from the brake servo vacuum line an atmospheric reference and an out put for control for the EGR.

SOO if you do not want to spend 100 on an EGR bypass kit you can use the brakes vacuum pipe or put one in of your own straight from the brake servo vacuum motor, which bypasses the controller and keeps your EGR shut forever

Not tested though, as my manifold was off when I figured it out and could not start the car.

Also Gav, after doing the air filter in the car today I am one, putting in a snorkel and two putting a V8 airbox in and taking the old one out altogether. Hopefully this leads to a cooler intake air as a result of the airbox not being on top of the turbo and exhaust and gives the turbo and exhaust a bit more breathing room..

    Regards,

Just a word of caution - any crud that ends up in the cylinder has the potential to damage your engine on startup. I've seen a bent piston skirt from a small piece of carbon after an injector was replaced. This is the main reason I removed the head on mine when I pulled my injectors - one was stuck fast, and when I finally got it out, a heap of carbon fell into the cylinder.

Clearances inside the combustion chamber are tiny - introduce stuff in there at your own risk.

    I wouldn't....

If you do this, I would just use a rag soaked in solvent and just wipe out what you can get to.

Pulling the head is time consuming, but not nearly as bad as getting the sump off if you need to pop a piston out....

What have you got in mind as far as removing the old air filter housing? Been thinking of this myself, but not works out a way to make enough room to mount a decent air cleaner.

It looks like the turbo diesel Air Filter housing is just a piece of plastic with 3 securing bolts.. I am just going to fit a V8 airbox in the V8's stock spot (Behind the right headlight) and run a custom pipe to the turbo.

The mounting points for the rack and airbox are already there on the right hand side and the hole for your intake is in the same spot. Just need to source a V8 airbox :/

Also I tested the EGR, at vacuum it is open :S at atmospheric it is colosed, contrary to my initial thoughts.
