    Another steering column

Ok, so ha I g a bad run, surprise surprise with my 02, Vogue.
Long story short, it appears I need an upper steering column, as it just isn't turning over, never mind starting. Originally, the key wouldn't turn, so the locking pin was removed from the ignition barrel, which was good for a week or so, but now the key turns and the steering lock is disengaging, but it is refusing to fire up.... So it's looking like its an ecu issue of some sort.

Aside from a dealer, or $7000 off eBay, is there anywhere else I could look at buying a steering column????
    Thanks in advance....

    G'day Paul

I don't fully understand the fault mainly because these things are pretty complex. However I was talking to KHOR in Brisbane a couple of weeks ago and they had a vogue with the same problem. The fault was with some module on the upper steering column which couldn't be bought separately. I think they also said the key had to be matched to the module (I could be wrong on that point). Unfortunately the cost was in the range you described.

Thanks for the replies gents, Grumbles, the issue doesn't appear to be the steering lock, it seems to be more of an electronics issue. However, it now has an issue where the steering wheel now comes in and out as the motor also seems to have died, it appears it needs a steering column, and I guess my mission now is to find a second hand one.... Not liking my chances.... But we will see. I'll remove it and have a look to see if there is anything obvious....

I had issues with my steering column when I purchased my 04 L322 last year. I managed to find a second hand one (without the adjusting motors) on Ebay for $700 delivered from the UK to Australia. They are definitely out there for a reasonable price.

Hi Careyba....So it looks like I'll be purchasing a steering column from the UK, there's quite a few of them on Ebay, my question is, when I go to fit it, I'm assuming that it will have to be programmed somehow to the ignition ?? is this a dealer only thing??? what issues dod you have with yours when you were fitting it?

    Thanks in advance.

PS, it seems the reach motor nut has been threaded from use, and it needs replacing, so that would fix my column moving in and out freely, but obviously not the lack of starting issue, but my tilt motor has also given up the ghost, so it (the actual motor) would also need replacing, and obviously still not fix the no start issue.

The car starts fine first thing in the morning, but when the days warms up, and the inside of the car also, it just flat out refuses to start, then the next morning, when it's cool again, it fires up first time. so obviously there is an electronic issue related to heat somewhere, I'm guessing something to do with the immobiliser..

Anyone feel free to chime in if it saves me the cost of a upper steering column.....

I didn't end up fitting it, the column is still in my shed. My issue ended up being a broken plastic clip on the reach motor. I don't have any info unfortunately on how to set up the new column.

I spoke to my local range mechanic and I don't think it was that big a deal to fit the column. The expense seemed to be in the parts themselves

    Hi again guys.

I have found another steering column, but before I dive in for the swap, is there anything that needs doing when the new column is fitted???

Ie: calibration of sensors, a trip to the dealer for codes etc etc???

Any help again is greatly appreciated...

    Paul
