    MY11/MY12 4.4TDV8 turbo drain fix

Does anyone know whether the secondary turbo drain re-routing as per LTB00513 has been done to their engine? It seems that the 4.4 had the same oil accumulation and subsequent burning problem that the 3.0 TDV6 had until LR re-routed its secondary turbo drain some time after the end of L322 production. However the 4.4's fix is much more involved, having to remove the front sub-frame and diff and drill and tap a hole in the sump. At least the TDV6 already had a hole in the block covered with a plate, presumably for the original dual turbo Jag version of the 2.7.

Edit: The new drain pipe is really 2 pipes from the left turbo with 1 pipe connected low on the sump where the original pipe was connected and the 2nd (new) one higher up.

Yes Graeme, done. Australs in Brisbane did mine - drama free. We had had the car six months when suddenly every time you put your foot down clouds of white smoke poured out the back. Quick search on FullFat.com site and lots of UK owners with same issue so I worked out what it was - fixed under Warranty as you identified.

All good now. They had the car a few days though - I was their first

    cheers

I wonder why it was OK for 6 months of your ownership - any ideas? At least LR didn't replace the turbo then have the problem return after end of warranty like my D4, for which I purchased and fitted the drain kit.

yes, no idea on that Graeme; but it has run perfectly since - warranty expires 30 June and I guess I will extend it; 54K on the clock and still feels brand new - magnificent engine and gearbox and has to be best tow car on the planet.

As discussed in another thread Graeme...now that you mention it, when I had my car serviced by an independent early last year, he told me there was oil accumulation in the pan under the engine, which the dealer wouldn't have noticed at the car's first service because they don't bother removing the pan like the independent did.
So I took the car back to the dealer and asked them to check it. They asked me to being the car back for a fix, and when I did, one of their young blokes showed me some piping they'd brought in to do the fix. I'm assuming now that this is the fix you're talking about.
Some months later I took the car to be serviced by Wilf Chambers (specialist Jag Land Rover independent in Perth) who told me there was oil in the pan. I told him the dealer had fixed that months before. So he called the dealer ( he used to work there) and found out that they hadn't actually done the fix on my car. Instead, another car with the same problem had been brought in and they'd used the parts on that car, while telling me they'd done the fix on mine.
Understandably I was a bit miffed to say the least, particularly since this was a few days before we were due to head to the Kimberley.
Wilf sent the car back to the dealer and they had it for two or three days. They CLAIM to have finally done the fix.
But who really knows, that's what they said the time before.

    Here's a pic from LTB00416v3 with the dual drain pipe from the secondary turbo in place of the original single drain pipe. The original pipe goes from the turbo to the bottom of the sump whereas the updated one has a 2nd drain attached higher up;

The view is looking along the left side of the engine with the front diff having been removed from its mounted position on the side of the sump. If might be possible to see the original single pipe or the updated two pipes by looking at the engine and turbo from behind/above the front left wheel.

The new drain does not solve any oil leak problem unless the original hose that connects the lower pipe to the sump was leaking.

Excellent, thanks for that Graeme, I'll take that to the dealer as soon as I get back to Perth.

    Hi.

I have recently purchased a 3.6TDV8 and was wondering if this issue applies to to the engine in my vehicle?

    Cheers

No, your engine has twin turbos with normal drains rather than the primary and secondary with its oil scavenger pump that doesn't work well enough on the 4.4.

Very old thread i know but im wondering if its possible to see this mod dring a purchase inspection.
I looking to buy a 4.4 and naturally doing my research on what to look for. Without taking sump guards or acoustic covers off the engine is it possible to see if the turbo's has twin drains? Can you get a hand in to feel for them ?
    Cheers Tim
