Hi Guys,
Getting very close to the car being completed and registered. Ive got my unregistered permit and have been doing a few drives to make sure everything is in order......and it really is nice to drive.
I now have a little niggling issue that's obviously only popped its head up now that ive had a chance to drive it.
When im driving along just cruising, under very little load (im taking maybe no more than 5-10% TPS), at around 60-70 km/h the car seems to have a small miss / hesitation. Very small, but totally noticeable.
At idle the car is 100% fine, and anything over about 10% throttle yields no missing or hesitation at all, and is really smooth driving. Full throttle is a dream, with no hesitation, and nice pickup for a big heavy car. Not sluggish at all.
Im not getting any codes come up.
The only other thing that might be worth mentioning is that it also seems evident (under those same driving driving conditions), where the transmission seems to start sliding itself into overdrive, and as it does it hesitates, making it immediately pop out of the overdrive (even though it never QUITE gets there). If i hold the throttle in the right place i can get it to continue this cycle over and over......but as soon as i increase the TPS a little, it doesnt do it any more. Not sure if that makes sense, or is even relevant...?
Anyone got any ideas?. If i did buy some diagnostic software, would it even help diagnose it seeing as im not getting any codes come up?
Dave
Hey BigJon,
Great question!. I must admit I just assumed if there were any codes of relevance, they would come up on the dash LCD display.
I accept though that this was merely my logic thinking "how else would I know if something was wrong with the car and it needed to go to a mechanic?" Happy to accept Im probably wrong there though.
Is that to say that not all codes come up on the LCD display?
Dave
my experience - well less than 5% of errors are relayed to the instrument panel. IMO, you are wasting your time without knowing what the car thinks is wrong (reading the fault codes)
I also don't see what engine/transmission we are supposed to be throwing ideas about.

sorry harlie - I forgot to add that info. Thanks for the prompt.
2002 L322 range rover. 4.4 M62TUB44 4.4 Litre V8 engine.
Not sure if there are differing transmissions, but its a 5 speed auto.

Check the simple things first,
When was the last time the plugs and leads were checked/changed.
Air and fuel filters should be checked next.
Hi all,
just wanted to update this with a little more specifics.
It would seem as though the "hesitation" I am feeling is exclusively when the car is going into overdrive. Do they have an electric overdrive of some sort?
If im driving along and the car starts going into overdrive, it will "almost" get there before it gives a little hesitation and then come straight out of overdrive.
If I put the car in manual mode to try and stop it from going into overdrive, the problem does NOT happen at all.
Again we are dealing with a 4.4 M62TU motor with an automatic. Year is 2003.
Im not sure that the usual suspects would fix this? I can change plugs (car doesn't have leads?).........but im not sure filters would cause the very "electrical" feeling hiccup as is goes into overdrive.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks so much guys.
Dave
If you're at fairly low speed and you put to sport mode it'll drop back 5th to 4th.
If there's an electrical fault in gearbox system, then diagnostics will pick it up.
But first try simple things like disconnect/reconnect trans plug a few times at gearbox.
Generally only get simple faults up on dash display that a driver should be aware of. bulb checks, etc.
I've a TD6 and had some quite severe faults, like in tank fuel pump failure that will STOP the car as fuel level drops, yet it doesn't show up on dash display!
But to answer one of your questions, you have a 5 speed (all mechanical gears) ZF box; its electronically controlled for changes.
"Electric" overdrives died back in '60s -Jags, triumphs, rovers-- no doubt more makes. They were a totally separate gearbox tacked onto back of a manual gearbox.
Hi All,
Im not sure if its time to start a new thread given that myoriginal description of this issue was not correct at all.
I originally thought the issue i had was to do with theengine misfiring, but in actual fact its not this at all, and seems to be withthe transmission and the car "Hunting" when trying to go intooverdrive. The engine is running smoothly with no missing at all.
So, to go back to square one, this is the issue i have. Caris a 2003 L322 4.4 Automatic.
If im driving along, and the car attempts to go intooverdrive, it will slip into overdrive, then "jerk" for a second andwill then immediately pop out of overdrive. If i leave my driving steady, itwill continue to do this cycle over and over again.
I have attached a youtube video of what the car does so youcan see the behaviour. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VfRv72xGqo[/ame]. For those ofyou that know the area, the flashing lights is me passing each overhead lightin the eastlink tunnel (melbourne eastern suburbs). The video is taken as imake the gradual climb out of the tunnel city bound.
Once i get above about 92km/h it will no longer have theissue at all, and will happily go into overdrive and stay there.
Im no expert with transmissions by a long shot (a very longshot in fact), but it almost seems to me as though (and im speaking veryignorrantly here), there is something wrong with the torque convertor lockingup, but then once it gets over that ~92km/h hour mark, it locks up fine. Improbably way off themark here, but thats the easiest way for me to describe howit "feels".
I've done a bit of searching and cant really find any otherposts with a similar issue, so im at a bit of a loss. There seems to be soooooomuch stuff electronically controlled by these cars that i fear its more of anelectronic issue than a mechanical issue.
donrover suggested unplugging and replugging the trans plugat the gearbox, but ill admit ive been having a bit of trouble finding that.
Has anyone come across any similar issues, or have anysuggestions as to what it might be?
Thanks so much to everyone
Dave
