    TD6 Alternative transmission(s)?

I see that BMW have fitted 6 spd ZF auto behind the M57 engine, in some X5's about 2003 on.
Why not in L322 then ?
Most of the wiring in L322 is identical to the X5 (E53) so--------
    Has anyone looked at this?
2 overdrive gears--VERY overdriven! Fuel saving benefits?
No doubt have to change the engine and transmission ECU's, but what to do with BCU?

Don, there is a discussion about this here somewhere from about 3or4 years ago. And on the big UK forum around the same time.

General opinion is that it would bolt up but:
Electronics is the blocker. The ZF has a mechtronic (valve block, sensors and ECU all in one internal unit). I'm sure the CAN baud rate is different on the post 2003 X5 so it won't be plug and play. An aftermarket conversion ECU would be required to get the ECU on the network. And Rangie would be a dog without integration of the trans.

I was seriously going to have a crack and put a heap of time into it, but ended up repairing / modifying the GM5

In the other discussion, I also found a US company that can rebuild and "double" the strength of the box for around $5K, time on a ship is about $250 or something.
Nearly the same price as a standard rebuild here

I too would love the zf box in it. I have been deeply looking into the 5HP24 from the V8 version, as far as i can tell from schematics is the K bus line going from the trans ecu to the eng ecu is not on the V8...every other wire and pin number matches directly if changing the transfer box ecu also

From what I read on the link you posted up - its the same as what the few repairers that actually know the box are doing here. Mine has those upgrades listed except for the extra fictions rings - and that's only because the originals looked brand new, so it got new factory spec frictions - obviously nothing wrong with that component. Once again this topic has also been covered in depth over the last couple of years, nothing new in that US site...

Big issue is there are many repairers out there that are not addressing the root cause - the fundamental design flaw of the box. You can make it stronger but without addressing the cause and just strengthening the symptoms it is only going to fail again.
