    Cargo area lighting

It was time to get the cargo area lighting up to my now-gone D4's lighting standard with its own switch and LED lighting. The globes in the tailgate are yet to be replaced with LED globes.

The switch - out of sight but readily accessible:

    The LED strip:

    The comparison:

The power wire to the tail-gate cargo area light was cut and power supplied directly via the rocker switch. The globe has been removed from the side light so that it doesn't operate with the other interior lights.

Ta Graeme. Did you need to remove the upper tail gate trim to connect the strip to the light circuit? A switch is a real good idea. A few times recently I've noticed the upper tail gate lights still on even though the tail gate was closed.

I poked a draw wire through the hole for right tail-gate light. I wanted to remove the cover but didn't know how and didn't want to break anything.

The cargo area lights operating with and only with the rest of the interior lights was inconvenient as well as being on a short timer, also inconvenient. Initially only the switch was fitted with LED globes planned, with a LED strip only if then needed.

Graeme I put a LED strip in my tailgate recently, the cover for the existing light on each side of the tailgate clips out easily enough without breaking, I just wired the LED strip into the wiring for the factory lights, works fine.

You're right though, it would be better with its own switch, but then, I rarely need to be in there for long anyway.

Having spotted and removed the screws in the centre of the cover it thought that it would probably just pull off, but didn't really need to remove it anyway. The tailgate lights themselves readily un-clip.
