That's a good honest report. Yes I agree nothing beats a L322 for cruising. My wife didn't want another Rangie, until she rode in one.

Good review Greg. The only thing I would have qualified further is the comment on the blown shock. I blew a shock on the same road 14 years ago. One of the nearby station workshops was selling shocks for all the major Japanese models. Later in Kununura I came across a Patrol with a spring mount that cracked off from the vibrations. In short those roads punish all vehicles and many suffer failed components from the effect of corrugations.

Other than that small qualification, 100% agree. My 08 RRV is probably the most impressive vehicle I've owned. The power, torque, comfort and off-road ability of this vehicle is amazing.

Nice review Greg. One of the comments about 'I shudder what it will cost to maintain in 10 years' is typical of the publics perception of these vehicles. Mine is 12 now and actually the cheapest vehicle to maintain that I have at the moment. The only money I've spent on mine is for 'that's getting a bit long in the tooth so I'll fix it' type of things that don't have to be done, but you do because it keeps the car feeling tight. The engine in mine is still going strong, as is the driveline (touchwood on the gearbox though). But the later ZF units seem to be doing the right thing at the moment.

There wasn't room to elaborate on the shock failure in that story, but if you follow the link in the story to the extensive report on that trip, you'll see I explain in full the damage suffered by many different makes of vehicles on those roads, not just mine.

Agree entirely. Mine hasn't given me any more trouble than I would expect - apart from self-inflicted injuries, just a split in an intercooler hose, fixed under warranty. Having said that, they can be expensive when things go wrong, which is why I took the precaution of extending the warranty. Apart from that, mine is no more expensive to maintain than anything else I've ever owned.

Yep, that just about sums it up! Couldn't have put it any better. I also extended warranty - mainly as I'm on my 3rd air conditioning compressor...(!). Otherwise its been pretty reliable and anyway all was forgiven after the big trip we did in June/July, which was 7300km of faultless outback touring. After that the dog looked worried as to what was more important to me........lol!!


I did find a gadget that plugs into the ipod cable in the centre console and gives me Bluetooth music streaming to the stereo:

Thanks Chris...I'm not too fussed about the Bluetooth thing, but your comment on the air conditioning compressor got me thinking...a couple of times over the past week or so I've turned my aircon on and it's taken a LONG time to generate cool air out of the vents. Just yesterday, I had a car full of people and we all noticed it took a long time...is that a sign of the compressor on the way out?
