Something was needed in Toowoomba since Dave (aka Blknight) moved out.
I hope all goes well for you ......... but you'll need to get some 'outside' jobs happening to pay the rent, instead of just working on your own vehicles.![]()
Well, due to rapidly increasing age and lack of employers wanting to give us over 60's, experienced people a job, I've just opened my own business.
Rad Rover, 41 Ball street, Drayton, 4350. Ph 0420591030. email: radrover07@gmail.com
I'm offering full diagnostics, servicing, repairs and modifications to all Land Rover, Range Rover and Jaguar cars.
Owned and repaired, modified 5 Range Rovers, 2 Jaguars, plus countless other owners'cars over 25 years in these marques.
So, full engine, transmission rebuilds plus general repairs.
( My ultimate reason is that I've been carting a basket case E type around for some 20 years and never had anywhere that I can properly restore it!)
My first job awaits/ next week-- my own L322 that had a torque converter failure ( was supposed to be a "reconditioned" one from USA that I bought over last Xmas break, when everyone here was closed!). Naturally I was 200km from home, towing a car trailer, cooked some clutch packs but was able to limp home after many topups of ATF and now she sits awaiting my attention/ full rebuild.
So even the 5L50E tranny couldnt cope with a slipping/failing TC!

Good luck with your new venture.
I used to live in Drayton, on top of the hill adjacent to the lookout, near the 4GR aerial (is it still there?!)
Regards, Pickles.
Best wishes for the new adventure Donrover0.
Shame about the TC giving up, wonder if there is an update model and will it work with the G/box.
Good luck.

Did the TC give up because of pressure drop? Well documented that pressure is the issue with the 5L40/50, without the right pressures the TC starts to slip and self-destructs. Using the 5L50 internals without sorting the pressure issue was never going to solve the problem long term. There is actually nothing wrong with the 5L40 internals, those of us that had the box opened at the first sign of TC slip found a perfect condition transmission, including the friction/clutch packs. The valve body and regulator was sent away for testing which showed the real issue. My TC clutch even looked perfect apart from some discolouration from slipping a couple of times over the last few days.
Friend in the Gong had a US imported 5L50 fitted by the auto specialist a couple of years ago - its given up too. Pressure regulator leaking... Its off for some valve sleaving action now. The factory GM value block and regulator is the issue. He's furious as it didn't last as long as the original, with the exact same failure.
Anyways... Don, good luck with your venture, get some advertising going and I'm sure a guy with your knowledge and enthusiasm will do well.
AND - don't worry, your age isn't increasing any more rapidly than mine![]()

Clever move Don, all the best, and now you can actually get paid for all that specialist LR knowledge built up over the years doing your hobby (providing you don't only work on your ownbabies.
Bessie is still going well and in one piece albeit just needed a Christmas trans rebuild after reverse clutch plates gave up the ghost.
Found out (later/too late) after the event that the creme de la creme is supposedly to put a 6HP26? front end on the 4HP24 for additional strength/towing. Cheers Gavin

Hi Gav,
Glad to hear Bessie keeping you happy. That 4HP24 trans was from (less than 50K) Hong Kong Jag and was like new when installed. Maybe I overworked it?
Anyhow, the new venture is sparking considerable interest here in Toowoomba. While sorting out the workshop I've not been advertising, but been doing a card drop on any parked LR and Jags I see.
Feedback is nobody is happy with the local dealer; that's a pretty sad scenario for new car owners?
Already getting jobs and (partly) open 1 week! Driveway just concreted; held up by last weeks rain and New Year break, but will be usable mid next week; Defender coming in then. Week after a Jag with major work.
So no rest for the wicked.
