L322 2003 HSE ignition lock (not the normal issue)

Hi folks, New to the forum so here go's.

I've got a 2003 L322 diesel, fantastic carbut I've had it 5 days and we're stuck.... (qualified mechanic, very auto-electrically minded)
(it really is fantastic, love driving it)
The ignition key wont turn. So I've been online and searched the forums for the usual faults, most suggest removing fuse #18 for 30 seconds and dropping the battery lead off etc, no such luck. Issue still remains and key wont move more then half way to position 1. Tried dropping the battery cables off, reconnected, no luck. The only thing I've touched is the key fob, I removed it and replaced the buttons with a new set. Otherwise I havn't changed anything.
I have since lubricated the solenoid valve inside the steering lock barrel. no change. The biggest difference I can tell to other peoples issues is mine doesn't sound like its trying to unlock when inserting the key, nothing at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just took my other car off the road so I'm suck without wheels.....

    Thanks
    Dan

theres a tiny little rfid like radio tag type device inside the key fob which the car is looking for as a security measure, and if it fell out and wasn't put back in, the car security system wont see it and wont unlock.

The RFID has an encrypted code is what makes the remote unique.

I believe its the little black wedge in the picture:

Thank you both so much for your help, turned out that little black chip had fallen out while changing the buttons, she's up and running and as good as new! Now to remove the egr + cooler. videos before and after (as well as rough 0-100 times from My gps data logger )
