    Serpentine belt

    G`day ,

    2003 TD6 .

    Can anyone tell me if the serpentine belt for the alt, ps wp ETC can be fitted past the fan without its removal ?

    Or can the fan be undone so that there will be enough room to fit the belt between the coupling and pump ?

    If i had a belt i`d try , but don`t at the moment .

    The other question i had was the diameter of the alternator pulley but i`ll be able to measure that myself .

    I'm not sure, but the fan comes off easy enough - it's been off a few times before. A 32mm spanner on the nut and a quick smack with the palm of your hand is all it takes. The fan guard has been 'modified' so this can be done without removal of anything else.

    Thanks Gav , that will make it easier .

    I haven`t looked too close at , just made sure all the revolving bits still did and they do , just missing a belt .

    When Jool left the fan was roaring from cold , it`s done that once before that i noticed .

    That time i took it out the road a couple of miles and it was right when back so had little concern this morning when i heard it and that`s what they should do when working properly .

    It had a ride back from near Koo wee rup , Jool has had RACV since 1988 and never even had a jump start but went to Total Care just 12 mth ago so we`ve got some value but they are ahead still .

    Marios out fishing and if he has one i think he`s my best bet .

    G`day ,

    its done a couple of hundred km on its new belt and none of its pulleys were seized or anything else so i guess it was just end of life for the belt .

    This had the car laid up for 4 days . Saturday to Tuesday

    I was unable to locate a belt local within a 2 hour drive ie Autobarn , Supercheap , Repco on the Sat or Sunday , others are closed . To order was Tuesday or Wednesday and still had to go and pick it up .

    Repco didn`t even have one at its warehouse or the 5PK 810 or PQS000190 AC belt

    Plenty on the internet and the one i`d ordered from the UK last Tuesday turned up on Tuesday ( yesterday ) same day as the one from Roverlord .

    The main reason for typing this is if you are like me and just expected you would be able to get a 5PK 2020 or PQS000200 serpy belt easily you may be wrong if your not in a major population .

    Ours now has a spare belt of each type in the back with a pic of how the belt runs along with an inline pump .

    Is there anything else i should have on hand that can stop its use as easily as the belt did ?

    I must admit the belts were something I never did, so they may have been originals. You could write a list as long as your arm on things your local Supercheap won't have for these vehicles, but you can never carry all the spares you may ever need, so it's a bit of a hard one.

    The only ancillary I'm thinking may still be original on that car would be the alternator. I replaced the in tank pump when I first got the vehicle but never did the inline pump under the passanger side behind that panel. Given that even the pump I put in would have well over 100,000KM on it now, maybe the fuel pumps would be the other things to look at?

    The hoses on the engine are all original too, but they were all in good condition and nice and flexible, so I've never seen the need to do those. The idlers and water pump are all original too, but again, when I had the head off I checked these and they were in very good condition - no rumbling bearings, etc, so I stuck them back on.

    G`day ,

    yes , i remembered when you told me about it that the alt and inline where pretty much the last of what hadn`t been replaced which was a definite sell point for me .

    That`s good to know because the reason it went for a drive was because i found nothing wrong .

    I bought an inline Bosch pump which is what i think it has because if the one in it lasted that long , i`d be happy with ten years from the replacement .

    Though the Polish ones are much cheaper and could well be quality .

    I got a Valeo type alternator from the UK to suit an X5 M57 but when it came it has a 6PK pulley and takes the later oval plug .

    I now know there are 2 plug types both 2 wire but one is square and 1 oval for the same alternator and i know the body/mounting dimensions are the same as what i have and because of the belt fail i know the pulley diameter and i already knew where the centre of the first rib runs so a pulley and plug shouldn`t be too hard to find .

    It`s the chance taken when buying from overseas but it will still be cheaper than i could get here and i`ve learn`t a bit about these alternators and i`ll learn some more when i figure out which is ignition and which is lamp on the 2 different plugs .

    The other thing i noticed about the belt is a shorter one could possibly be used but a longer one would possibly allow the tensioner pulley and the upper idler to come into contact as there is very little space between them as is .

    I`ll have to do some searching to find how common crank/cam position sensors fails are .

    It seems the low fuel pressure sensor will make them stop but most other things including low pressure are non start things .
