    Worn Brake's

My 2010 TDV8 is telling me the brakes are worn via dash warning, is there any way I can tell if its front or back or both without taking the wheels off ad inspecting?

A torch and an inspection mirror throught the wheels might give you enough access to see the pads.

Its probably a good indication to check all brakes.

Have a look at the front brakes , they normally go first before rears as the weight is on the front when braking.
    cheers

Strangely mine were much more worn on the rears. however, i do not know the prior owners maintenance. Entire new rear rotors were required where the fronts just needed pads

I think that is no longer the case with modern computer controlled braking. From my experience on my D4 and on two BMW K1600GT and one BMW K1200GT motor cycles it is the rear brakes that wear out first for my type of fairly gentle on the brakes driving.

I think the idea is to apply as much rear wheel braking as possible to ensure that steering is not compromised due to front brake lock up. The BMW's have computer controlled brakes. You apply only the front brake and the computer controls the optimum rear braking. It is always the perfect amount as I would do myself so it is a good system. I think the LR ABS must work in a fairly similar way.

I think it depends on how the brakes are used - gentle braking uses the rears as much as the front whereas hard braking favours the fronts. As front brakes usually seem to have more pad area and thickness, gentle braking will wear out the rears before the front. City vs country braking?

Previously my D4 driving was mostly city with long trips thrown in but now it is all touring. My BMW motorcycles are basically all city riding. I think you are correct Graeme. I tend to drive as little as possible on the brakes even in the city but my wife is probably heavier on the brakes. The fuel consumption always drops when I drive the car after her so she must be accelerating and braking more I reckon!

Thanks for all the replies. Has anyone recommendations on what type of pads to use OEM or other third party and good place to source in Aus - or is from UK best for value?
