Might be worth sticking some shade cloth over the slots. I think the 3.6 has a radiator in there too.
There is a small radiator in front of the right front wheel that vents onto the wheel through slots in the guard lining. Reversing in mud throws mud up through the slots directly onto the radiator and probably mud splashing whilst going forwards does too. Mine was totally caked with mud and small gravel, with no airflow whatsoever. If the screws, nuts and clips holding the front section of the liner are removed then I suspect that the liner can be pulled back sufficiently to clean the radiator, or even possibly just hosing upwards and forwards through the vents might be worthwhile.

I was half-inclined to block them but would then want to provide somewhere else for the air to escape. However having to escape via less direct paths has to be better than totally blocked.
