    Replacing ignition switch

So I have this exact problem 2 weeks into ownership. I'm staying positive, but SWMBO won't be happy if there is something every 2 weeks!!!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6fyhFTGtLg

From FFRR it sounds like I replace the ignition switch, but what I don't understand is whether that means new keys? Is the ignition switch just the electrical component separate to the key barrel? Or do I need to buy the whole ignition assembly?

On microcat, I think I'm ordering item 11523 which is part #YXB000090. That said, almost no where has that part number listed. There is part #YXB000073 though.

Can someone explain the ignition barrel/switch thing to me?

And secondly, any recommendations where to source such parts locally?

Cheers all. Apart from this, the L322 is going great.

P.S. Brand new battery a few days after I bought it and have double checked battery voltage. I'm pretty confident the problem is in the ignition area.

Is this the steering wheel motor seizure thing where the motor that puts the steering wheel in/out seizes?

If so there is a fix involving drilling a hole and reoiling the motor, to avoid a $3500 part. I haven't been able to find the specific drill hole thing but maybe some L322 owner can.

If you AULRO google on the bottom of the page there are also some threads

This has nothing to do with the steering lock problem. With that problem, you cannot turn the key in the ignition. I can always turn the key in the ignition, but the starter motor is not triggered when the key is moved to position 3.

GENUINE LAND ROVER IGNITION SWITCH RANGE ROVER 03-09 YXB000080 NEW | eBay

    G`day ,

if the link works it may shed some light if the switch is at fault as in you can buy the switch not just the whole unit , i don`t know i`ve only looked because your problem could be mine one day .

In the online Workshop manual page 268 shows an explode view .

Land Rover Workshop Manuals > L322 Range Rover System Description and Operation > STEERING > Description > Steering Column > Page 268

I`ve read that some have cleaned the contacts on the switch and solved the problem and i guess if something has been spilt down the hole that could make sense , maybe some contact cleaner down the hole .

It may be an idea to get someone to turn the key while another taps the starter , to see of the solenoid is at fault , they may have lots of electronics but the old style physical stuff still counts for mine .

As i said i have no practical knowledge about it .

From the vid you showed it seems that one started when the key was removed/replaced and wasn`t going to other wise , is yours the same?

I think those links are correct that the switch is a separate part. That's good news as it means this can be resolved without changing or interfering with the immobiliser ECU or key barrel etc.

Somewhat bad news is that the part is no longer available as a separate part. Can only buy a larger assembly that contains that part. I tried a LR dealer and another parts supplier so I'm not hopeful it exists anywhere in stock. I'll just go ahead with the bigger assembly.

For reference the switch alone is part YXB000070. This has been superseded to the larger assembly which is YXB000073.

My fault is not as bad as that video yet. I don't remove the key at all. Just turn it back and forth a few times. Often starts first go. Sometimes needs a few attempts. I'm hesitate to bother with contact cleaner. Could it ever be a long term solution or only ever a bandaid? I'm not really sure. Happy for a cheap fix but don't want a cheap and nasty fix!

    G`day ,

did you supply the parts numbers , when trying to get just the switch?

Are you using the Russian one ?

Reason i ask is , as with the US link the place in the UK where if i needed i would try is YXB000080 for the switch $87.38 plus delivery less VAT and the unit is YXB000073 which is $400.93 plus delivery less VAT .

    They don`t have a listing for YXB000070

Neither are in stock and are ordered from L/R

Another UK place that sells Britparts list the number YXB000070 as the unit , which is superseded by 71 then 72 till 73 .

    Hi Peter,

I gave LR the YXB000070 number and they confirmed the original number was the smaller component, but it's been superceded through to 73 as a whole assembly.

YXB000080 is almost certainly the same unit? I'm thinking it could be worth the gamble...

OK looks like 80 is for the petrol vehicle.

    fullfatrr.com - View topic - Ignition Switch

It is mentioned that xxxx90 is for the diesel.

Maybe I can get in contact with LRDirect or Duckworth.

Thanks , yes it looks like 90 and that`s what you thought it may be in your initial post .

Why the diesel one , from what i`ve seen is twice the price of the petrol one is a bit hard to take .

I wouldn`t like to price one in AU nor a complete unit .

I would hope if a complete unit was required it would be VIN coded so`s the original key could be used .

None of the new units i`ve seen say they come with a key and really two keys are needed so it would seem if a unit was bought , it would still have to be taken apart and the switch fitted to the original key barrel , which defeats the purpose of a unit .

The chip can be swapped from key to key and same with the ring on the ignition barrel but there would be a need for a few more keys than really wanted if the door and ignition locks were different .
