    RR Hubs on a Camper

This popped up on my face book feed and I thought it may be of interest:

My Camper weighs approx 1 tonne loaded. I have done many trouble free outback km's using modified ALKO hubs (Ford or Slimline bearings - 1500Kg). The grease cap on these hubs is a neat fit through the hole in the centre of 02 - 05 RR wheels. The ALKO hubs were modified by removing the previous studs (96 Disco) and having a workshop fit new studs to suit the RR wheels. Tyres fitted were standard L322 road tyres, 255/60/18's.

Yeah, there is a MY12 L322 in their team. Used in all their air suspension literature

I'm intrigued by their statement not to use 10PR (LT?) tyres on their campers to save the shocks on corrugations. I think that I would prefer to destroy shocks than tyres but perhaps tyres with at least LI 116 survive well enough and save the shocks. The tyres I'm considering to fit to my RR next time are P-rated with LI 117, not LT.

I have a Kimberley Karavan and I told Bruce (the owner and RR driver) that their preferred BFG tyres are now 10 ply with the advent of the K02 and asked him whether they are OK on my KK. They now come standard with K02's (10 ply) on 16 inch wheels but he doesn't like other brands of 10 ply tyres! The 285x60 R18 tyres that I have and he says are now used on 200 series Toyotas according to the link, are 8 ply but he is worried about the lack of side wall height causing problems with the shockies.

I will just stick with the IFS 100 Series 16 inch steel rims that I have on mine and won't try to match the car. I have been on many of the very rough inland roads with my KK and never had a problem with the Fox shocks overheating.

Graeme, what tyre are you considering next? I still have bit of life left in my LTZ's (which to be honest have been very good on all surfaces) but was thinking I'd go with KO2's next time to get that little extra sidewall.

I suggest that you see if you can organise a test rim swap to discover whether the KO2s are too noisy. I've applied a fair amount of anti-vibration material so just driving mine wouldn't be a satisfactory test unless you were to do the same.

I'm still undecided on my next tyres. I really like the KO2 performance and haven't finished with fitting deadening material but there's still enough noise, perhaps now mostly tyre on road noise, to look for a quieter tread. I was considering the Yokohama G015 which is replacing the G012 but not yet on sale in Oz presumably due to stocks of G012, but the G015 speed rating has been increased to H so their sidewalls may be too vulnerable, although the G012 in the same size might already have light sidewalls anyway. Both are LI117 in 275/55R20 but both appear to have a considerably narrower tread than the KO2 so sidewall and rim protection isn't as good. A local tyre outlet owned by Yokohama have said they can get a set to inspect but as I wont need replacements for another year it's not appropriate to decide just yet.

I'm considering acquiring a 2nd set of rims and keeping the KO2s for outback use.
