    front diff replacement

    Hi all
My Rangie being in storage had missed the recall on the dreaded stripped prop shaft replacement
after many a long night trawling the net, lots of inquiries and miss information
(was told that you simply change input coupling whilst diff in position and use later prop shaft) didn't seem right to me but people supposedly in the know convinced me
Anyways rang local wrecker on availability of parts whom had a prop shaft from a V8 (same part numbers) and then totally confused him and me over the input coupling replacement
Was advised to give wreckers in Adelaide a call and after much discussion and a return call was advised to replace complete diff
Placed order for diff and it arrived the next day complete with said input flange
    Now the fun begins
Rave advises to hoist motor drop subframe etc etc etc
    Must be a better way...
    dropped pressure to front bags
unbolt calliper, disconnect brake sensor & wheel sensor
    remove level switch
    disconnect torsion bar
    loose swing arm bolts
    pop axles out of diff
undo mounting bolts for rack and tie rod... push rack up
    remove bolts bottom of strut
drop swing arm down axle will follow giving you plenty room to squeeze
diff out and new one back in again

    'Note'
Just remembered you will have to disassemble drivers side as well to get axle out enough for diff removal

You have done a great job on the repair

Just curious; did you approach Land Rover Australia ? I would have at least tried, it was a known / recalled fault. Surely LR would have budgeted and arranged parts for all Australian delivered cars. Not sure on the Consumer Act regarding this !!!

Yes did approach them.... was told that the recall was not on anymore
This is where I started to get the miss information on how to fix
In the end I was running short on time and the whole job cost around $600 and approx. 3hrs to do could do it quicker now I know what to do
My original diff had been changed in an earlier recall by the look so should be
low ks would like to replace the input if anyone has a damaged diff they want to offload
    Cheers Terry

Looks to me like you only had to change the coupling on the diff...not the entire thing.

How much fun did you have trying to get the cv spindles back through the wheel hubs?
mine were very tight and took a long time with a ratchet strap and some banging on the hub

Didn't need to pull cv's out of hubs not looking forward to that when time comes
Had trouble with drivers side getting axle to seat
Splines lined up ended up block of wood and hammer went straight it 1st hit should have removed cv boot 1st
