    300,000 ks TD6 - asking for problems ??

    Gday All,

A bloke I know has offered me his L322 TD6 ( 2004 build ) but it has 300,000ks on it. I know nothing about these engines , so before I even think about it just wondering what im in for with that sort of kms on it.

Since I have known him he seems to keep it well maintained but if the engine is at the end of its life then that puts a new swing on things. From what I have read the gearbox is most likely nearing its end.

I don't really need to buy it but then again I always wanted 1.

    Thanks and Cheers Ean

If the motor has been serviced properly it's probably good for another 150k km +.

It's the tranny and to a much lesser extent parts of the TC that seem to be a problem.

At 300k km it would be a very long lasting tranny. It would need to be cheap.

    Electronics also age.

The facelift reportedly has better electronics. But lots of these still running around.

Thanks for the reply, the trans is what seems to be the unknown from what I have read. Its cheap , but throw in a trans rebuild/replace and a few other things and im guessing for not much more you would pick up a lower km 2006 vintage.

has it had the turbo done? that's my next worry point with mine, as its original at 330k, had it inspected at 320k as its gotten quite loud but have been assured its in good nick.

probably due for a starter also if not replaced yet. Apart from the injector loom which is cheap engine should be good if its had a few oil changes in its life and has had the breather filter done at least every 50k or better still swapped out for a filterless one

Injectors aren't that super expensive and fairly easy to do a leakdown test on them. Mine did one at 300k on the dot. Main symptom was TC lockup shudder.

As everyone else said bank on a trans / tc

but if its the right price its a hell of allot of car! I have seen the few early petrols pop up at around the 8k mark and think hmmm that's tempting but I really don't have the cash spare and just know the chain guides will be kaput and they will need new motors, or so I keep telling myself

Mine's nearly done 340k, bought it with 315k on the clock. Both front airsprings went within a few months, spares not so expensive anymore. Engine still great, though one of my injectors started leaking too- replaced the lot, though I can't agree that it's a cheap fix. Cost me a bloody fortune. Had the trans rebuilt with stronger bits when it went, so that's another $6k. Hopefully no more problems for a while. I don't regret a cent I've spent on it, it was pretty cheap at the time with some of the bits I wanted already there- roof rack, bash plates, UHF, 2nd battery, computer remap plus the light tan/walnut interior (hate the grey plastic one). I think you're fine going with a high km example if you get it cheap enough and budget for replacing the bits I've mentioned. Remember, you're buying a car that was originally $160k so parts can be more expensive. Low pressure fuel pump seems to be a thing to watch on these too. Haven't had any issues apart from a leaking vacuum line to the turbo, and boy did that make a difference when replaced with a new one. At last she goes as she's meant to. Good luck!

The V8 was released at the same time. I doubt there's a V8 of that vintage with 300,000KM on it - nice engine, but not long lived and is showing a lot of faults as it ages - go take a peak at Full Fat RR if you want some interesting early V8 reading. The TD6 is a peach of an engine and would do 500,000KM easy with good maintenance.

V8 is also half as expensive again as the diesel to take anywhere.

The m62 4.4 is a great engine till you get to 250k and need some big big jobs done.. timing chain etc etc😯

Ah, ok. Knowing his penchant for the petrol varieties that's what I'd assumed here.
