I just had a look on Lubrizol's site and it said this of the C class lubes;

These define the requirements for “catalyst compatible” engine oils for service fill usage in passenger car gasoline and light-duty diesel engines with aftertreatment systems.

They are designed for use in high performance gasoline and light duty diesel engines where advanced aftertreatment systems such as Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) and Three Way Catalysts (TWC) are used.

It doesn't really clear up whether it's an either, or together.

I love this comparison tool too, you can overlay the various sequences and really make sense of them

Asked Penrite they said it was a complicated question requiring a complicated answer . He said it depended on the vehicle and engine type as well as the oil specification as well as the aftertreatment fitted . I then waited for the complicated bit that never eventuated . Broad question so i guess they needed specifics .

Searched some more and seems diesel can have both or just the TWC , the petrol can have TWC or the oxy cat ( 2 way )

I have some Castrol EDGE Full Syn 10W 30 API SN ACEA A5/B5 which says on the bottle is not to be used where A3 B4 is specified .

It`s for 600 kms in my sons 2002 Subaru liberty that specifies API SL its book doesn`t give an ACEA .

The Castrol recommended oil for it is Castrol Edge full Syn 5W 30 API SL ACEA A3 B4


Also have the Penrite Vantage semi syn 15W 40 which is API SN and ACEA A3 B4

Last the Nulon Full Syn 5W 40 which is API SN and ACEA A3 B4

Ive read that because of the tests done and other the two ( API and ACEA ) specifications can`t be compared .

Ive read that the API specifications are backward compatible so the SN should suit SL ?

The Castrol oil at the top that is in the Subaru if using the API specification the SN should suit the SL that Subaru say it needs but if using the ACEA specification the A5 B5 is not A3 B4 .

The other oils have API SN or SL and ACEA A3 B4 with no conflict .

Can you see what it is i`m not seeing ?

Do you think the oil should come out of the Subaru ?

I can tell you dx3 does kill the 5l40e auto in about 1500 k's with a load on the back, and you might get 4000-5000k's without pulling a load.

Until being informed by rick130 and some reading he instigated by that information , i had the same view about synthetic oil , mostly because i had never taken the trouble to try to understand anything much or question anything .

The next change in 4k will still be the Nulon Full Syn because i still have around 11 liters of it and the engine seems happy using it .
I`ll decide what to use when i see the right spec at the right price but i now see the base is not as important as i presumed .

Our 5L40e uses Penrite FS even though not the latest specification because of council here and information and explanation that Penrite gave as to why the FS was their recommendation , he provided graphs of how and where the two oils worked and differed , though the bloke i messaged with then was much more helpful than the last bloke but in fairness the second blokes question was not as straight forward .

just wish to point out I know little about oils, and ATF oil, and in my case it was the President himself of the Australian Transmission rebuilders Association who repeatedly put DX3 in my 5l40e. I can't recommend ATRA.

How many KM have you got on your new/secondhand 5l40e ?

I understand what your saying and understand why your no happy with what happened .

I have a gripe with people saying that a particular business is good at rebuilding the GM auto and its only been reco a month before .

Ours has a bit over 100,000 km since it was reco ( if i have it right ) and if it is able to do another 100,000 km then i would say it was rebuilt well but i may be expecting too much .

I picked up some Penrite 5w40 full synthetic from SCA the other day on special. This is what the Penrite oil selector recommended for the tdv8 3.6.

not to take the thread off topic but 30k on the current box. before that 7 reco's over 20k by the president of Atra. need I say anymore.

Anyone use this semi-synthetic oil in their Lion tdv8 or tdv6?
