BMW Mk IV DVD NAV upgrade issues.

    Hi guys,

Finally updated from P38 to L322. Still got the P38 and the 2 door classic and the 85 classic, but really wwanted to try the L322 Vogue and the extra grunt from the Beemer 4.4.

So far so good, some stupid niggles like the tailgate not unlocking with the drivers door and other dumb things, but one thing really annoying is the CD based NAV system.

We left Melbourne on one day drive and got to Ballarat (<100kms) and the system announced that we were leaving the current mapping area. I mean, less than 100 kays from Melbourne and there are no maps available. In a country as vast as ours this is terrible.

Seems that a CD based disc can only hold 750Mb of data and the Oz maps clearly take more space.

So I get online and end up purchasing a MkIV DVD rom unit and installing that. Worked instantly and gave me a split screen option on the CD maps. Then I downloaded an ISO file provided by a bloke in the UK which upgraded the firmware of the head unit to SW 4 - 1/02

This upgrade worked perfectly and now even the CD maps look different, a slight 3 d look to them. BUT..........................

I got onto a company on eBay called Navigation Australia. ( http://www.navigationau.com/bmw-high)

It was my understanding that the Range Rover L322 2003 model used a BMW 'HIGH' system especially when updating to the Mk IV DVD NAV unit. To play it safe and not burn cash, I purchased the cheapest option under the BMW section of the above website. It was $30 AUD and the disc arrived a week later from the UK? Seems, Navigation Australia are based out of Guildford UK? Weird but anyway!

Even with the firmware upgrade the disc didn't work. Dash monitor came up and said incorrect disc! A mate had an E39 5 series and copied that disc for me, also said incorrect disc.

I got onto Paul at Navigation Australia who was far from helpful, actually quite rude and offered no assistance.

So now I'm stuck. Does the Rangie actually still require a Range Rover disc, even with the MkIV upgrade. Looking at the UK and USA sites they seem to use a Beemer disc but nobody can offer any direct advice on the actual nav disc because Oz is clearly different.

Navigation Australia sells Rangie discs, but MUCH more expensive than BMW ones and offers no details, ie: no idea if they are CD based with limited mapping or DVD based with coverage of the entire country?

Are there any owners here that have done the MkIV upgrade and actually found a disc that works and gives total coverage mapping of Australia.

Long winded post so sorry about that.

Here is the link to the Navigation Australia Range Rover discs.

Range Rover Navigation Disc Australia & New Zealand V22 2016 GPS SAT NAV UPDATES

Seems to be no info on whether they are CD based or DVD based. No coverage details.

Nice collection you have there. Put up some pics. Most of us would appreciate a look.

I have the 2008 FFRR. It has a Nav system but disc is missing. To be honest I didn't think it was worth buying another out of date disc/system. Instead I use Waze maps on my iPhone that connects to the car speakers and provides me with speed limit info/monitors my speed and provides warnings if I go over speed, current traffic conditions and the fastest way to a destination with up to date maps.

Best of all the app is no cost. It's owned by Google.

I also installed a phone cradle. Here's a pic. I made the mount for the cradle from sheet steel.

The cradle itself is about 7 years old. Reused it from my old 110.

Rob, I'm running the MK IV DVD player for the GPS. The latest (Red) maps I can find are V19 which I got off the 'net. So far it has covered everywhere I've been (up as far as Dalby/Kingaroy and south as far as Canberra). It also appears to cover NZ.

I'm happy to try a copy of your V22. If it doesn't work I can send you V19.

Does your screen load up with the BMW or LR logo? The software in mine is BMW that has been modded to show the LR green oval and the words RANGE ROVER. The edited version is from Matt Stevenson in the UK and can be downloaded from his website. About Me | MyRangeRover.co.uk

BTW, dId you use the procedure detailed on the net to install the software?

    Thanks for the reply Ron.

The disc that they sent ,e is a BMW printed disc titled:
    CD Digital Road Map
    Australia/New Zealand
    2012

What concerns me is along the bottom of the disc says:
    Copy write TomTom International BV.

I thought that the Rangie used Navteq mapping?

It's V18 Ron. Can I send you the disc and you can try it in yours.

I went to Matts site and downloaded his software. It installed perfectly and now has a Range Rover splash screen instead of the BMW one. Just the two words 'RANGE ROVER' not the oval green logo. So that part seems fine, it's just that of the three discs I've tried, the only one that works is the CD based limited maps that came with the car when I purchased it. And to make matters even worse the one that came with the car is a copy disc so I cant tell if it's BMW / Range Rover or what!

If you PM me your address I'll post you the disc I purchased from Navigation Australia.

    Thanks.

I like your idea but I don't use a smart phone.

Is there an appropriate place to toss up some of my car pics for you guys?
