Why do you keep saying little Renault? I can guess you like French cars (...Commodore into the back of my Rangie at 100km/h) but the 2002/03 Espace used was a Large vehicle and weighed over 1800kg...that is a big vehicle. So an old and likely rusted large 4wd was crashed offset style into a newish more modern large car of comparable weight.

    Cheers

There was a thread on here about an audi that crash into a D3 on south africa. Gives a good indication of the strength of the D3 in a frontal offset crash.

You can find it easy enough through Google.

As for the OP, I'm interested to know what the outcome is, as it doesn't look that bad in the photo. Hope ypu get a good outcome either way!

Glad you're not hurt. The Rangie looks better than I expected, if it is not twisted. Hope it can be repaired.
The Commode was certainly totalled, in line with the crash design, which may have saved his life.
Reminds me of some years ago when a young tradie in a Commodore ute ran into the back of our D1 while we were stopped at the lights. The D1 had a steel bumper and a towbar. Basically, the Commodore was wrecked back to the wheels, with bits lying everywhere. The D1 had a small white scratch on the rear bumper, not even worth reporting to the insurer.

    Jeez. Glad you're OK mate.

Texting eh, that'd be right. How'd he pull up injury-wise?

Just a love tap you reckon ?

Doesn't work like that with head ons though.

People think, for example that a head on crash at 100kph is equivalent to hitting a brick wall at 200kph.
But its actually the same as hitting a brick wall at 100kph.
The problem, of course, is going from x speed to stopped in a VERY short distance....
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Vlad my son told me that a few years ago...physics major in progress. Having seen plenty of crashes the actual speed of that impact wasn't THAT high. It wasn't quite a love tap but it wasn't 100kph per thread title as such... Commodore into the back of my Rangie at 100km/h

    Cheers

The FFRR looks amazing after that impact. However I agree with Shane. It must have some structural damage.

Im still amazed at how well the Rangie absorbed the impact, regardless of if its a write off or not. And yes, Im aware that its not a 100km/h-zero hit, but he hit me while doing 100km/h+..I don't think getting into physics theory is going to bring he's Commodore back..
He admitted to highway patrol everything, he's lost he's car, not insured and busted himself in hospital for 3 days..lesson learnt is better than charging him.
I was surprised that the rear door and tailgate still opened without too much issue, but its a matter of whats happened to the rear frame that will determine the outcome, given the impact.

The rear of full size 4wds and even most passenger cars are much stronger than the front of passenger cars (crumple zones in front versus - typically - none in rear and the rears set up for load and towing loads).

Good to hear you are all good!

We get that here a bit too and I got tapped in the back slowed down to 80 on dusk in the wet (Drunk driver arguing with wife on the phone)

What people seem to forget is that Crash testing is only an indication of possibilities and they only test to 80 Kph, Anything over that and all bets are off.

Full chassis vehicles are deemed Dangerous etc but the reality is they are dangerous to the other vehicle's occupants more than you and the height also plays a part in that calculation.

Hope you get the old girl okayed to repair!
