    Automatic Gearbox oil cooler

    Hi Guys,
I have bought a 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 to tow my caravan. My van is 3.3 tonne when fully loaded to go away with all the water and food and shoes. Does the TDV8 have a gearbox oil cooler or should I put one on?
Thanks guys as this place is very helpful.
    Cheers

You would be better getting this thread moved to the RRS (L320) section for more responses.

But to answer your question - yes there is a gearbox oil cooler - it is mounted in the radiator - if you lift your bonnet and look to the right near the top of the radiator (near the coolant overflow bottle) you will see a hose about 10mm going into the right top area of the radiator - this is one of the hoses from the gearbox.

Strongly recommend an enhanced one, plus if not already fitted an EGT gauge and ATF temp gauge. Maybe a Madman?

Change the 6hp26 gearbox oil regularly with correct oil & add a couple of tubes of dr tranny & update software. Research and find if recommended to use manual gear selection at any time eg up hills. Search 6hp26 heaps on it. Also read up on turbo failure prevention. Carry spare inter cooler hoses or better upgrade to silicone. take care of these items and you will be happy.

I have the L322 and asked a transmission specialist this question when I bought the car some 9 yrs ago.

response was "no - not needed - HOWEVER if you do fit one, make sure it is inline BEFORE the factory cooler". Reason being that the "cooler" is thermo controlled and these transmissions don't like to run cool either - like an engine

I've used IIDTool to display trans fluid temp on the instrument panel quiet a few times and it never goes up, only varying by about 5deg - towing on the highway it sits at the bottom of the range - pulling away from stand still is the only time it goes up to the top of this range - drops back as soon as either the throttle is lifted or TC lockup occurs.

My advice - get some evidence that there is a problem, I'm not sure how different the RRS is but the FF doesn't need it. FWIW, same goes for the intercooler, the data says it's plenty big enough.
