'System engine fault' (3.6 TDV8) whilst towing 2 tonne van

Has anyone had any issues whilst towing with 'System engine fault' coming up on the message centre and the vehicle immediately going into limp mode. I had this issue about 15 months ago when towing the van Brisbane to Sydney? The fault occurred about half a dozen times but did not happen on the return journey. It has never happened when I'm not towing. Two weeks ago doing another trip with the van the issue occurred again with the fault occurring 3-4 times over a 6 hour period.

I received some helpful info from DiscoJeffsetter re his 2010 D4 saying he had a similar issue with his vehicle and a smoke test revealed an air leak from a cracked plastic part.

Anyone had this issue with their 3.6 TDV8?

    Thanks.

    Cheers
    Steve

Have you checked for a split in the top i/c hose? The split normally occurs underneath.

It’s best to take each top hose off to check for splits. And check throttle body and MAP each side while they’re off for build up. They might look like this.

I checked the 2 top hoses for splits and found nothing but tightened the clamps. I had replaced them about 4 months ago with silicon ones which I'd purchased from UK.

    Thanks Pete.
I wasn't as thorough as you but I'll take them off and have a look. Actually I got M R to fit a set of them at the last service so I'm assuming they would have looked at that.

'System engine fault' (3.6 TDV8) whilst towing 2 tonne van

G’day Steve if the set included all hoses disregard the below about checking hoses.

Otherwise the next option is to look at the 2 top 90 degree hoses which are harder to get off and on unfortunately. After that it’s the two hoses at the very back which Paul from Perth has had to replace twice. I haven’t done these as they are the hardest to get to. Also bottom IC hoses, which seem to be less prone to failure. After that it’s probably looking for a small crack in a manifold, which can get bigger. Which means new part. A member on here blew a manifold a few months ago. The hole was surprisingly big.

An IID tool might help narrow the search by showing which bank has reduced manifold pressure. You might have to put some load on the motor to see it happen. A drive up Cunningham’s gap or Toowoomba range might do it.

Steve as you have emulators fitted your pipes shouldn’t have the build up of oil and exhaust particles (gunk). But it would be interesting to check.

System engine fault (3.6 TDV8) whilst towing 2 tonne van

Pete, I remember last year when we stopped at Tamworth and got the dealership there to put their diagnostic tool on the engine and they cleared the fault code.

They couldn't replicate the fault again but tested the engine for over an hour. They seemed pretty thorough in their approach. I watched the last 20 mins of it but they blinded me with science as to what the tests showed.

I remember they wanted to run a "smoke test' but I declined because it meant waiting another 2 days before they had an opportunity to do it. I gather that test was supposed to show up any (air?) "leaks" in the engine.

I promptly forgot about this test when I got back to Brisbane because the issue hadn't arisen until a couple of weeks ago whilst towing the van.

Do you know anything about this sort of test or whether it's even relevant?

    Cheers
    Steve
