    L322 starting issue

A mate with a 2002/3 L322 has an issue in that he has to disconnect ( and re connect) the battery to get the car to start and he seems to only get one shot at starting without going through the process again.

    Any ideas ?

    Diesel or petrol?

    What are the symptoms?

If it doesn't start, does he return the key to off before trying again (that's needed). Has he checked the XYZ switch by just rocking the gear lever (mine needs adjustment) if it doesn't turn over?

Maybe ask on fullfatrr.com - Index

Is it logging any fault codes? Bringing up any other lights it shouldn't be?

V8 petrol. Awhile ago he said he had issues with the ignition (which I believe is in the console ??) and steering lock ?. The mechanic he uses pulled things apart and lubricated things (the steering lock bit I presume) to get it to where it is now. The same mechanic has previously replaced the steering column and ignition switch so seems to have a bit of a handle on L322 idiosyncrasies and does specialise in European cars. The RR owner is trying to avoid going back if it is something simple and therefore avoiding (another) large bill.

All my info is from the RR owner who is not really mechanically minded and via a phone call. I am trying to arrange a time to have a look myself and was looking at things I could investigate.

Hmm, the old steering column ignition switch problem! Inability to turn the key is usually not due to the ignition lock, it's usually caused by a faulty steering column - I know that's hard to believe seeing as the key is nowhere near the steering column.

    Can he turn the key?

    Does the engine turn over?

OK, had a play. Lets start with the engine running.

If you turn the key off just enough (position 1 I believe) to shut the motor down, it will restart. Obviously the key cannot be removed or the vehicle secured.

If the key is moved to position 0, the key can now be removed and the vehicle secured with the key remote. When you unlock the car, insert the key and attempt to start the car the dash lights up but no engine cranking.

Removing the neg terminal from the battery, count to 10 and refit, the car will now start.

I will probably have it in my shed over the weekend so I can do some more checking if I have a clue where to look.

    TIA

So the key turns to position II and then will turn to start but it doesn't crank.

Try turning the key off, move the gear lever slightly and try starting again - just in case the XYZ switch is slightly out of adjustment.

After reconnecting the battery and starting do you rotate the steering wheel fully from left lock to right lock to reset the steering angle sensor and the EAS?

BTW, if it's a Vogue, don't disconnect the battery until the sat nav has shut down. Leave it for a couple of minutes before disconnecting the battery. Not sure if this also applies to the HSE. See fullfatrr.com - View topic - battery dis-connection procedure
