how do i tell if the Mechatronics Unit E-shift is failing (the transmission computer

    Hi,

Got a clunking and 'transmission fault, limited gears' on dash with my 2007 V8 L322 (6 sp ZF). Just wondering how to check if it is the Mechatronics Unit E-shift that is failing (the transmission computer ) rather than clutches on 4th gear. Car will clunk changing down from 5ht to 4th and then will have to stop the car before being able to use all 6 gears again. This only happens going up a hill when the trans kicks down.

Didn't take a note of them. But the mechanic said 99.9% sure needs a new transmission! Do you know how difficult it is to replace a trans on a L322?

Does gearbox still clunk if you use the gearbox in manual mode? It could just be a solenoid, but without the codes it's hard to say. I would get and post the codes, so you will get the best advice available here before you spend your hard earned.

Does the mechanic know the gearboxes? Your gearbox if original wont suffer from the soft stator bushes that began being fitted to ZF 6-speeds during 2008 so depending on kms, it may only need a filter (pan) and oil change and recalibration or may need replacement solenoids. If the box has done 250K+ kms then perhaps overall best to have it rebuilt especially if you expect to do another 250K.

No it won't change gear to 5th or 6th. Have to stop the car and turn off ignition and then it is OK again.
