Is there a definitive L322 buyers guide (pre purchase inspection list) floating about

    G'day L322 owners.

What would you say if I said I'm thinking about replacing my my92 classic with an L322?

Yes, I know you're laughing inside and saying I'm bat**** crazy.

I'm thinking about it. Not determined... yet.

Nothing wrong with the classic, but it's a case of checking out something different.

I don't know enough about the points of failure and while the recall page has some obvious stuff, I'm sure honest owners on here would be far more adept at appraising a vehicle they already have years of experience with.

So hit me with a list of things to consider, be it manufacturer of engine or specification, problems areas which seem to be recurring instances for the majority etc.

I don't know exactly why I am considering an L322, but it surely will go offroad - maybe not a trip to yalwal but I'd like to think I could take it to the cape say next year, or at least do a CREB/OTT annual run.

Only concern I have is fitment of mud terrain tyres (secondair internal beadlocks in a spare set of rims) a decent winch and front bar (compatible with airbags obviously) and the rudimentary air suspension spares (overhaul / replacement parts necessary)

Anything underneath these vehicles which you reckon isn't up to the task? plastic stuff that needs to be replaced with metal, or better protected?

Is that transfer case and ZF box reliable, or is it a nightmare waiting to happen?

Just the normal stuff.... waterproof enough? reliability of the electrics (has to be better than an RRC/p38 for sure right?)

All opinions valued, but I'm not looking for the sugar-coated religious sermons. I can get that on youtube or a dealership.

    cheers

It really depends on budget, diesel or petrol.

I personally wouldn’t buy an L322 before MY08, others will say only buy before MY07.

Some will say stick with petrol and others only diesel. I’m ok with either but suitability depends on typical driving style and km per year.

For example, I think this car on face value represents excellent value and would be relatively trouble free with such low km and with some specific mods and maintenance.

This car is also good value, but a lot more fun and regarded by many as having the most reliable motor ever fitted to a RR.

    Hi Mercguy,

I gather you want diesel engine in your l322 ?

If yes, the early td6's are easier to work on than the later tdv8's. Less maintenance as far as I know.

BUT, the gearbox/transfer case is ****.

The later models with the zf box have proven to be very reliable altho there are some that have problematic.

There is a bit more maintenance on them as you put the k's on them and now that I'm retired,I'd rather spend my money
on other things than worry about what could go wrong with a newer vehicle.

I have the old td6 model and it will keep going for a few years yet.

Others with the latter models will no doubt chime in with there hi's and low's of the latter l322's.

However, no bull bars or winch carriages are available for the L322.

I have owned my 2008 L322 3.6 for about 4.5 years. I love it, even though it’s layed up again this time as a result of a AC induced trans failure.

While I love the MY08 as being simpler than later editions and taking 18” rims, almost everyone says the last generation L322 4.4 diesel is the best choice.

I think few would argue the BMW TD6 is a great motor, but as DG says, a shame it was matched to the GM 5 speed box.

Here’s a pic from the FFRR website identifying what motors were matched to what gearboxes.

    L322 Range Rover - A Buyer's Guide & Experience (ABC)

Here is a link to the Ffrr site section on buying a L322 and other owners comments. Most mechanical bits are relevant, but some corrosion, rubber issues etc are salt related due to their winter conditions. It's a very interesting and informative read.

Note that the chart is for the UK - it doesn't show the 5.0 NA engine sold here alongside the 5.0 SC.

Further to Graham’s comment. I think the Jag 4.4NA sold here until the 5.0NA became available.
