    Mine was the safety lock plunger that failed (small magnet) - I did the interior light "fix". The key needs a 12v signal back from the steering column ECU to indicate all good and it can release the key lock. Jump the interior light onto this signal wire and the key is able turn from the lock position when the interior lights are on. Steering column lock motor is unplugged obviously in the unlocked position with the broken safety lock pin in place locking the motor in the unlocked position.

    Fixed mine a couple of months back 2003 l322, found my worm drive motor had dirty brushes. Fed it 12 volts sounded crap sprayed contact cleaner on brushes and comm. Wow ,smooth as. Hasn't missed yet. Bit fiddly though trying to get the pins out that secure the cover. Ended up tapping a 4mm thread and used screws to reassemble.
