    4.4 TDV8 PCM updated

Yesterday the PCM was updated, ostensibly to have the fix referred to in LTB00454 but hoping for particularly one other improvement, which appears to have been resolved although still early days yet.

LTB00454 refers to hesitation while using CC in the speed range 100-160 kph. Mine had the pulsing at 110 kph on the drive home from collecting the vehicle late 2015 after which I tracked-down the known issue. My vehicle was April 12 built which was well after the LTB was raised but obviously the PCM had already been programmed, wasn't updated at pre-delivery nor by the dealer when reselling the vehicle to me. The instantaneous fuel consumption display would show consumption rising and falling by a significant degree in time with the pulsing which caused my body to rock back and forth. On the drive home yesterday, which wasn't much of a test, the consumption display only slightly rose and fell at 100 kph but I've never felt the pulsing at 100 kph so no real confirmation yet.

The other issue which was my main concern was excessive torque converter slippage on take-off or after slowing turning into a street. I had been told that this engine and gbox combination in the L405 doesn't suffer the same excessive TC slip. The couple of standard spots since the update on both gentle and more normal acceleration have revealed far better behaviour, reminiscent of the operation of my previous 3.0 D4's rebuilt gbox with its updated torque converter. One particular up-hill take-off from traffic lights next week will be a significant test. The TCM s/w is at the latest level.

The engine feels to breathe differently in undulating terrain where I now hear a very slight gurgle/burble on light throttle. However I'm not accustomed to listening particularly attentively for engine noises which are barely discernible in the very insulated cabin anyway so nothing may have changed. The engine acoustic cover hasn't been fitted for a couple of years.

    Anyway, the update looks promising.

Interesting .... I also sometimes feel like it's not the case with my L405. Do you think that I can do this on my car as a precaution? And what exactly is it? Playing the control unit software?Google can't find the newsletter.

And when I wrote to the service station, they wrote me this:

According to the VIN of your car, this bulletin does not apply to him. And therefore it cannot be found under it.Unfortunately, there is no database where I can reach for it. It is only visible on vehicles that could be affected.

I expect that the update is only for the engine in the L322 because the first L405 would have the updated version at build time. Mine should have been updated at least during pre-delivery in June 12.

I have January 2013, so I won't deal with it ... thanks for the reply.

Hi Graeme, did the transmission behaviour change with the updated software? I still haven't chased up whether or not mine is in the VIN range, However the 2nd gear TC slip hasn't changed in 85k since I bought the car, (176k now &#128555 so whereas it is seemingly not causing a problem, it is annoying...

Yes Justin, transmission behaviour has definitely improved which was my main hope for the update. Getting moving after slowing for give-way signs and suburban street corners previously caused the TC to slip to the extent that I was always up-shifting which sometimes didn't trigger an up-shift but mostly caused the TC to lock after a few seconds but because now in temporary manual mode I'd have to get it back to full auto to prevent being in 2nd when next stopped rather than 1st - just excessive manual shifting especially in traffic. Now almost always the TC doesn't slip, allowing revs to drop below 1,000 and allowing brisk enough acceleration when the throttle is squeezed which makes the vehicle very pleasant to drive. The trailer has to be attached for the TC to unlock when turning slowly into my uphill lane but otherwise just squeeze the throttle to accelerate. I noticed yesterday on a couple of brisk take-offs from lights that the change to 2nd was at much lower revs than previously in the same circumstances, producing less noise and attracting less attention. Another improvement is that where previously I'd use a bit of stick to get moving at a reasonable pace then lift-off for more sedate acceleration there would be flutter and hesitation which I considered was poor matching of the turbos and the secondary inlet isolation valve operation, whereas now acceleration in that circumstance is much smoother and secondary turbo switch-out almost imperceptible.

I was prompted to have the PCM updated when my son Justin who has my old D4 recently said that the 4.4 in the L405 doesn't have the L322's TC slip at every slow corner. The D4 didn't have the TC slip, particularly after having been fitted with an updated TC, so the L322's behaviour has been quite an annoyance to me.
