    upgrading to 3.6tdv8 or 4.4tdv8

Its time to start searching for a newer model RR(current RR 3ltr TD6).
Was thinking of a Skoda (either a superb wagon or a kodiak),but I dont think you can fit a towbar to them(at least not in OZ).

So its a case of 3.6 or 4.4. Am thinking of going for the 3.6 as I dont really need the extra oomph of the 4.4.
Will be looking at years 08 - 12,depending on how much I will have to spend next year( inheritance).
Will be doing services, small jobs myself, anything else I,ll be getting my mechanics to do it.

This particular one caught my eye, seems to be well looked after and not driven on the school run.

Your for/against for each model engine most welcome.

I reckon the 8 speed would be worth chasing, but that means the 4.4...

    very nice car that..

    3.6 was MY07-10, 4.4 MY11-12.

Note that it is quite expensive to fit the 4.4's dual drain for its secondary turbo if not already fitted due to the task taking around 8 hours for an experienced workshop.

I think Summit on here recently went from a 3.6TDV8 to a 4.4TDV8 and he thinks it was very well worth getting the larger engine.

I have an 07 3.6, just completed 2500Km in south west NSW. I am amazed at the power and comfort of these things.
8 speed gear box is apparently so smooth you don’t notice changes.
4.4 a bit better fuel economy, not sure in real driving though.
3.6, no DPF, no oil drain required.

I was looking for a 4.4 TdV8 for quite a while, the big stipulations for me were "not black and light interior" a few came along but at Dealers and to me very overpriced ! The price for MY2011-2012 cars seems to have has risen about $10k in the last 9 months, great if you own one; not if your trying to buy. In the end I picked up a 2010 Autobiography with 174k on the clock, for under $30k, service wise all RR dealer and Independant history, shocks replaced etc. The interior however was a mess, they used this car to drive to their farm via the local ag store. It was a mess , hay carted in the back, wet carpets ( sunroof drains blocked) etc. It took me 3 days to thoroughly clean and restore the interior, but the end result was worth it. By the time I was finished it cost me $35k with new inlet manifolds. That's at least $13k cheaper that the next year model with high mileage !!!

The point is, if you can wait and shop around you can find some real bargains if you can do some of labour and servicing.

This car has been remapped and puts out the equivelent HP and torque to a standard 4.4TdV8, fuel consumption is slightly better, if I'm driving; worse if the boss is driving, she loves the effortless power delivery. I think a remapped 4.4 would be an awesome drive .
I think Graeme and Justin would agree the 2010-2012 models ride better the the newer L405 variants, but they handle better as their around 450kg lighter.

In the end either engine will do, it's just what you want to spend ? The 8 speed is a superb gearbox, when you can get 7.5lt 100km out of these 2Ton cars at highway speeds what else could you want ? mine is about 9lt 100km.

    MY07-09 3.6 6 Speed auto
MY10 3.6 6 Speed auto, but has TFT Dash and active suspension ( great, but almost double the price to replace )
    MY11-12 4.4 TdV8 8 speed auto, paddle shift etc Brilliant engine/auto combo.

Do your homework with your budget in mind, either way you won't be disappointed; if you can afford the 4.4 TdV8 go for it, as Graeme said just check that the drain mod has been done on the earlier MY11 cars. In all honesty if a low mileage 4.4 TdV8 came up at the right price, I would still seriously consider it. If you test drive a 3.6 against a 4.4 you will pay for the privlidge.

I have a MY08 3.6, and love it. I think it now has 296,000km and the motor feels like new with oil changes every 10,000km with an oil flush. The 3.6 L322 is great bang for buck, and it’s the last L322 that you can fit 18” wheels (GOE type) with stock standard brakes.

Harlie on here just did a similar move from td6 to 3.6 and says it’s a much nicer car to drive.

But like any newer car they are complicated, so there is a good reason to buy as young and as low km as you can afford. Although lots of km on a younger car indicates low stress highway km.

Also, From what I’ve read every new release L322 has been better than the last, so I’m sure the MY12 L322 was the pinnacle.

I’ve not driven the L322 4.4 tdv8 but have driven a 2015 D4 with 8 speed, and is noticeably smoother and TR works even better than 6 speed.

    Thanks guys for your thoughts.

It will be next year sometime so I,ve got plenty of time to look at what comes up.

Plus with Comrade Dan,s mess up it makes it hard to view anything in Vic if it comes up.

    cheers

Depending on your needs, also consider the 4.2SC. They are very highly speced, incl rear diff lock, have a great reputation for reliability, and can be reasonably priced especially as when new cost somewhere near $200k.

I had a 2009 3.6 TDV8 and it was a one owner by an old gentlemen. Was a superb vehicle and towed my 3.0T c/van easily. Still don't know why I got rid of it after two years. Get an 8 speeder if budget allows as it is a magnificent box.
