when i bought it, it had a long list of faults and yes it has more or less been off the road since.
i had no idea what engine was in it, i found out it was a BMW M62
it had done 210,000km and the timing chains were making a lot of noise
when i came to remove the gears off the camshafts, i couldn't remove them, the torx bit just snapped, while trying to do this, the camshaft slipped and bent two valves
i cut the chains with the angle grinder and removed the camshafts
with the camshafts in the vice and using a 3/4 rattle gun, compressor up to 150lb, it took about 5 goes to get them loose, all four were the same.
when i got the engine back in one piece, i then knew for sure i had bent the valves but i expected that, the main problem was the engine light coming on.
the diagnostic tool said the valve timing was out. (it said the timing was out before i pulled it apart)
i went to several range rover specialists and asked them to put there diagnostic equipment on it, but as soon as i said it had the M62 they would not touch it
i did get two mobs to test it but they came up blank
to cut a long story short, i pulled the head off, checked every thing and checked it again and again, eventually put it back together and it seems ok

Even here in the U.K. it is difficult to find someone who will do more than routine servicing of this engine when fitted to either the Range Rover or BMW X5

I don't understand this......what was their rationale for declining a diagnostic test?

    they do not touch M62
one place had an immaculate 2004 range rover M62, which they showed me, it had engine problems, said they were going to wreck it, i could have it for $4000
it was a trade in, the pervious owner had spent $10,000 trying to fix it with no success
it really was a beautiful car

Local BMW specialist just said they won't do chains, they said get a wrecker motor and they'll install that.

I wanted to do the chains preventatively... But hey.

Their justification is that once chains are rattling there's usually more than just chain guides needed and it's usually toast... Apparently

that applies to some other vehicles as well, mainly, i think because of the plastic partials contaminating the oil system

It's probably a symptom of lots of abused cars, not looked after, they change the guides and something else fails because it hasn't been looked after, or has been starved, etc... They then get blamed, hence probably not wanting to take the risk.
